“Oldfashioned Charm”
Reviewed July 16, 2010

Location is great, very central, as well as close to the subway. It's one of those old-fashioned charming luxury hotels and you really do feel looked after by the staff. Nice touches, like the turn-down service where they also arrange the slippers next to the bed and fill the cooler with ice cubes. Still want to go here with my girlfriend some day, so she can order from the "bath menu" in a room with a fireplace!

It's the former Ritz-Carlton, and has the charm of an old hotel that's been around. The rooms aren't the largest ever, there's no pool, in short, this is not a resort in the Caribbean. If you don't care for character, just bland luxury, you should maybe pick another hotel.

If you're lucky you can get a great rate well below the Westin and others, which are fine, but very bland in comparison; I'd pick the Taj any time over those.

Laundry service did mess up with returning my shirts too late, though (which is annoying on a business trip); but this was faultlessly corrected by having a cab bring them over to where I was having my meetings! And I wasn't charged. Exactly what I expect in a great hotel -- it's not about being without mistakes, it's how you take care of them when something goes wrong. The Taj did not disappoint.

My boyfriend stayed here for a long weekend in June. We were upgraded to a beautiful room with a view of the park. The staff was wonderful. There was a boil warter warning on our last day and the hotel promptly provided all guests with a generous amount of bottled water while everyone else was fighting for it in the stores. Parking was a bit pricy (as expected) but we were able to find street parking a block away. Overall, we had a fabulous stay there and I wouldn't hesitate to go back again.

My wife and I had a wonderful time staying at the Taj while in town for a family engagement. The rooms were beautiful, the staff was friendly and attentive along with an excellent location to the best areas of Boston.

My one true complaint with this hotel chain and something I wish I had been told before making this reservation concerns their room cancellation policy. Be aware that if you decide for any reason to cancel your reservation within 30 days of your expected stay - they will still charge you the FULL room rate.

I usually understand the need for hotels to have some form of cancellation policy but 30 days seems extremely excessive and frankly criminal.

If you plan a trip to boston and want to stay at the taj - just make sure you actually go.

Very nice hotel in the heart of town. Conveniently located, at least for my business purposes, and near the Commons. Lots of restaurant options within walking distance. The place is meticulously cared for, clean and comfortable. I do wish they would reconsider their antiquated policy on internet access. I find it amusing when a hotel catering to business clientele, in this day and age, post a daily fee on internet access. Also, they were apparently changing the computer program they use for check-in as it took a considerable amount of time and 2-3 persons looking over the desk clerks shoulder to complete the process. I am sure this issue will be a non-issue in a week. The room was slightly smaller than expected but very comfortable. Quiet air conditioning system, large comfortable bed. Larger than expected bathroom facilities. The work station was marred a bit by not having a logically located electrical outlet, and, in fact, with the predominance of laptops hotels should creatively and abundantly provide these access points, but that is sacrificed when one stays at a more traditional and long-exisiting building. All in all, a nice stay, courteous staff, nice location....

I took my mother to the Taj Boston for a special birthday. We had a room overlooking the park, with two double beds and enough space for a dance. The staff were incredibly professional, friendly and welcoming. The location was excellent minutes from the underground system, 15 minutes walk to the start of the Freedom Trail and the same to the Prudential Centre, the start point for the Ducktours - an essential for any tourist to go on. There were many restaurants nearby although we used room service twice.

The breakfasts were excellent although a little on the expensive side. The fixed price dinner was good value. I didn't object to most of the prices. The club bar provides a hot appetiser with every glass of champagne or martini after 4pm. The pear martini was so good we were upset not to have tried it on day 1!

My only criticisms of the hotel relate to the bedroom. The air conditioning unit was so dusty it clearly hadn't been cleaned for some time. I would have expected a separate shower and bath. The bathroom was a slight let down. I do prefer to have tea and coffee making facilities in the room but this is not always provided in a 5 star hotel.

I do think this is a 5 star hotel with a couple of small weaknesses and I would always try to find a discounted deal for it but nevertheless do recommend it.

We have stayed at the Taj a few times now and the service is different each time, sometimes great sometimes average. It's location is unbeatable in Boston and the rooms are nice (in our opinion the beds are amazing). The best thing about the hotel is looking over the common and being able to walk right out to newbury street, or to walk downtown if you are there for work. I can't give it 5 stars at the price they charge for the hit or miss service, but you certainly won't be disappointed by the location!
