Cheap this isn't, but as far as location goes; difficult to beat. Directly opposite Boston Public Garden, with the Common, Beacon hill, Back Bay and Theatreland all within easy walking distance. Room was excellent, but I do feel that charging $10 extra per device for internet is a touch OTT when you are already paying $300 per night. for some reason, our room only had one easy chair, which was a little bizarre..

I don't often frequent hotels in the city, so was very reliant on this staff to guide me through the valet parking and ideas on sight seeing. There's no way around the $44 charge for valet parking. There are no other options and I would expect that you'd find this at any hotel in Boston proper. Upon checking in, I immediately sought the advice of the concierge, James, who gave some very good advice on what to see while killing time before my scheduled tour of the Gibson House Museum (don't miss it... see other review under attractions). He advised a walk through the Public Garden right across the street and on to Beacon Hill to see some classic brownstones. If it's not important that you are closer to the Freedom Trail, I would strongly recommend this hotel. It is within walking distance to The Public Garden, The Gibson House Museum, Trinity Church, Antique Row and Beacon Hill. The room was very nice, quiet and comfortable. And of course, you must have a drink at "The Bar" the iconic bar with a view of the
Public Garden and street activity. I was not here on a Sunday, but it looks like the brunch on the rooftop (spectacular view of Boston) is a must-do. Otherwise, my dinner at The Cafe restaurant (see review) was very good. If it weren't for the price, this hotel would have easily rated an excellent. (Did I mention how incredibly helpful and friendly the staff was? :)

Room Tip: If you pay extra for a view of the Public Garden, it may be worth it, but you will have a view of th...

I first learned about the Taj Boston in it's days as the Ritz Carlton. My parents used to stay there when they visited me, when I went to college. To me, it epitomized sophistication and refinement in Boston. The location is ideal, the staff is perfect and the atmosphere was lush and understated. The rooms were beautiful- traditional with a New England touch, and the service was impeccable.

That was 15 years ago and now that I can afford to pay for a grown up hotel, I did not hesitate to book the same hotel. The location is still superb and everything is good. HOWEVER, it is no longer without fault. The public areas were kept up, but the rooms feel tired and certainly lacking here and there. I am actually surprised it is a Leading Hotel of the World. For example: The guest baths are in dire need of a face lift, at least re-grouting. The beds only had two pillows each and one mattress was slightly saggy. The rather large room we stayed in, with a side view of the Public Gardens, had empty areas where furniture should be. They charge for wi-fi (Really?!!!). Housekeeping comes at the strangest times- for two days we went out and returned around 2:00 p.m., beds were still not made. In the evening, we come back around 9:00 p.m. and turn down has not occurred. We can hear housekeeping talk outside the bedroom. They charged the same as Starbucks for a cup of coffee that is self served, in the morning. (Again, Really?!!!)

The attitude of staff is also hit or miss. We found a couple of the wait staff borderline rude on occasion, while others, especially the concierge and front desk, exceptional. I did notice that the price point has dropped and is not on the same league as the Four Seasons or Mandarin Oriental etc. I am a little saddened by the fact that even with the great bones, the hotel has gone downhill. Hopefully the Taj will spend some money to restore it to it's former, well deserved glory.

Room Tip: View of public garden would be ideal.

We checked in but the room wasn't ready (this wasn't a problem). Went back a couple of hours later to be issued the room keys. When we went to the room, the keys gave us access but it was already occupied! Walking in on someone was a real shock!
At first the manager just had an attitude of "no problem, we'll give you another room on a lower floor" until I pointed out that their complete failure of security was a major problem. Would someone be walking in on us? They then took us more seriously - but this was not a one off issue - they have a real issue with their room allocation system.
They then upgraded us to a very nice sweet. Gave us drinks in the bar whilst we waited for the suite to be prepared, and later the customer services manager delivered chocolates and a letter of apology. Much appreciated.
Great location. Lovely suite.
Very petty that they charge for wifi in a hotel of this level

We stayed at the Taj for three nights starting 29th September. What a fabulous hotel, great location and fantastic staff. When I booked I "liked" their page on Facebook and struck up a conversation with them, they asked if we were celebrating anything special and I explained that it was our 30th wedding anniversary this year and we were doing a road trip around New England strarting in Boston. When we arrived at the Taj, check in was swift and very courteous, we were given an upgrade to a room over looking the park and on arrival at our room there was a bottle of champagne chilling and chocolate strawberries waiting for us, how fantastic.
We ate 2 out of 3 nights at the hotels restaurant and the food was fabulous. We had a perfect start to our New England trip and cannot recommend this place highly enough, we would never stay anywhere else if we go back to Boston again, which I hope we will.
Thank you to all the staff at the Taj that made our trip so fantastic.

One of the more "reasonably priced" hotels. Ask for high level room in order to get view of park and Boston Commons. Would stay there again. The individuals at the concierge's desk were very helpful with information about sites, restaurants, etc.. We did not have car, so walked and used the "T" and the hotel was located within easy walking distance to many of the historical sites. The bar was casual and we enjoyed, however, our experience in the restaurant was not all that good.

Room Tip: High up to get views of park, Boston Common and skyline.

I love going to the taj. It is one of my favorite places to stay at. The rooms are great. The staff is friendly. The bar is awesome. The location is fantastic

I have stayed at the taj. At least 10 times. It is right by the common and Newburyport street. The lounge is great for sitting around and having a martini
