Stayed recently at the Taj Boston and felt like I should write a quick review, since there seems to be a variety of opinions here on the site. The experience was excellent, from the quick response by the doorman when my taxi pulled up, to the friendly reception at check in, to the large, comfortable interior room. My room was also blissfully quiet - hard to find when you're traveling on business and really need your rest to be on with clients the next day.
Food in the cafe was quite good, and yes, as a few other reviewers have noted it may be a little on the pricey side, but let's face it: you're in Boston, in a fabulous location just off the Public Garden, in a serene little cafe. I saw a range of customers, from families with small kids to older businessmen. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Not sure why there's such variation in the reviews for this hotel, but my experience was great (and I've been coming here since it was the Ritz).
A quick note: Amy in reservations was delightful and quite helpful, and Anil in the cafe deftly and discreetly anticipated a seating issue for me and swiftly took care of it, without ruffling a feather. A real professional.

We had stayed here when it was the Ritz Carlton Boston in the late 1980s so we wanted to try it again. The room was great, beautiful view of the Park. We could walk to Beacon Hill and down to Bostomn Commons. The staff was great, we had a lovely breakfast. I would do this again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Park. Take time to enjoy High Tea!

The good- the rooms are lovely. Old world European decor which I love. King bed room which was connected to one with two queens, in case you're traveling with a family. Big comfy chair and ottoman in room with the king bed, as well as a desk and chair. Ice machine conveniently on the floor. Two full length mirrors, bathrobes, slippers, an umbrella to borrow, minifridge, and lighted makeup mirror in bathroom along with enough space for your toiletries bag. You can't beat the location. It's as if its the hub of a wheel and all points go forth from here. Convenient to the T, and just around the corner or so is a Starbucks, Au Bon Pain (good for breakfasts), and other little cafes.Excellent shopping (H & M, Nordstrom Rack) around the corner. Up the street is "Cheers," as in the tv show. The Public Garden/Boston Commons garden are directly across the street and are beautiful for strolling, walking, playing, picnicking.
The bad- We used a "discount" website to book the room. My friend and I, each traveling with a child booked the rooms at the same time and noted on our reservations that we wanted to be next to each other. The front desk told us we'd have to be on separate floors.....until I gave him ten bucks. Then he found a way to put us together!!! As others have said, it's true that the doormen would have rather chatted with each other, than help us with our taxi doors or hale a taxi for us. Upon arrival, they did offer to bring our luggage indoors, but I suspect that's only because they wanted a tip. By the way, taxis are lined up out front, so you shouldn't have an issue getting one.
If you can get this hotel for a good price, I'd definitely stay here.

Room Tip: In case you're traveling with small kids, it's nice to know they have rooms that are connect...

Spent two days at Taj Boston with family (3 teenagers) on a Boston area college tour. Terrific location on Back Bay shopping district with easy access to Boston Commons and downtown.

Professional staff with excellent Concierge, terrific rooms, nice meeting spaces, and very nice exercise room. However, it's simple to cross the street and run with easy access to Boston Commons.

Back Bay shops, cafes, restaurants, etc are an easy walk around the corner. FYI - Boston Library on Boylston is must-see with its well preserved architecture and murals and just a quick 5-10 minute walk from the Taj.

There's easy access to the ArlingtonT Stop (subway) just down the street, as well taxis, buses, and numerous tours. Note: Recommend skipping the "Duck" tour vehicles as well as other driving tours since it's very easy to walk and see so much more on your own in the Back Bay.

Overall, the Taj Boston is a luxury hotel in an ideal location, with a professional, dedicated staff that will make sure your stay is a great one. Highly recommend it.

I have been going to the Ritz since childhood (over 50 years) and the outstanding services have not diminished. Great food, rooms and location in the heart of Boston. Great for kids too. The staff is very helpful and attentive. Also, you can step out the door and walk to some of Boston's best stores and the infamous Boston Commons. For a raining day, the hotel is very close to some of Boston's many great museums. While not inexpensive, your stay is worth every penny.

Room Tip: Rooms that face West for a great sunset.

We were in Boston to attend a special event being held at The Taj by The American Academy of Dental Science. Even though our last stay here had been disappointing, we decided to give The Taj another chance as it was most convenient to stay where the event was being held. We are sorry we did.

Just as it happened the last time, the doormen ignored our arrival by taxi. There were three doormen looking at us as we sat in the taxi expecting them to open our doors and help us with our bags. After at least 30 seconds, the eldest of the three doormen approached our taxi and just stood there. I opened my door and emerged dragging my bag with me. My wife got out on the other side with no help for her or her bag. There was no offer to help either of us as we entered the hotel. I do wonder why The Taj Boston bothers to hire doormen.

At check-in we were told they had given us a room on a lower floor as requested. There was an error on our check-in paperwork which my wife corrected. We were welcomed as new-comers, but then the desk clerk saw we had stayed there before and then welcomed us back. We decided
to carry our own bags to the room. Why not?

Our room was a nice room; clean and comfortable, but not exceptional. Our first stay at The Commonwealth Hotel found us received very well and upgraded to a suite. Our second stay at The Eliot Hotel we were upgraded to a suite.

We discovered too late that our room, 418, backed up to the exercise room. If you opened the closet door the noise was very loud. One can imagine that we did not sleep past 6 A.M. I know the hotel was not fully booked. This is very hard to understand.

The event we attended was wonderful. Excellent service and delightful and delicious food.

If you are looking for an unexceptional hotel in almost every way, then you might want to stay at The Taj Boston.

Room Tip: Try not to stay on the fourth floor.
