My son and I arrived here twenty minutes after the bombs at the Marathon, so perhaps the experience was not usual. Reception was packed with marathon runners. It took a good ten minutes to fight our way into an elevator and hotel staff were doing nothing to help. The room was very large and comfortable although in need of refurbishment (there was a rip in the sofa, for example). The bathroom, on the other hand, was so small that the bathmat would not lie flat on the floor! No shower gel, which was strange. Wi-fi is not free but if you join their loyalty programme (which IS free), then so is wi-fi. In addition, you then get free juice, coffee and newspaper delivered to your room at a time of your choosing. This worked perfectly. Room service, however, is woefully slow. It took 40 minutes for a bottle of wine to arrive. The cheapest bottle, with taxes, came to over $40 but was (eventually) delivered in great style by a very helpful waiter. There was a wide selection of drinks and snacks available in the room but they were hideously expensive. The hotel is in a good position for sight-seeing but is very old-fashioned and the service is impersonal. I think it is probably trading on its past and is not very special considering that it is not cheap.

Stayed there to run the 2013 Boston Marathon. The next morning, in all the confusion, we left some very sentimental items in the room (including the Boston Marathon jacket!) when we checked out. We called the hotel, they retrieved the items, and sent them them to us without charging us. This made all the difference, and earned them 5 stars, This said, the place has pluses and minuses. On the plus side, for the marathon, they are in a great location and a grand old hotel - very quiet. There are negatives. The room was small, there were no accessable plugs without moving furniture, and the decor of the room made it even more cramped than it had to be. They charge for internet, and the lobby is dark. But for our visit, these negatives did not detract from the act of kindness.

We stayed at this hotel for five nights between the 2nd and 7th April 2013. We chose the Omni Parker House after much debate and reading other good reviews and we were not disappointed. We were greeted by attentive doormen and check-in was quick (we arrived at 8pm so our room was ready for us).

On advice of other reviewers, I had joined as a Omni Select Guest, which allows you to select room preferences prior to arrival, which suited us perfectly as my husband has an allergy the feathers and all our requests for removal of feather items were in place when we checked in. The Select Guest scheme, also provides you with free in-room internet access, which was quick and efficient to check emails etc. In addition, you can order a free hot or cold drink, delivered by room each morning. Despite having a good coffee maker in the room, this drink service meant we could have fresh juice and tea each day before going out for breakfast.

We stayed in a Classic Queen room on the 9th floor (room 978) and had a view of the back of other buildings, however this was not a problem for us, the hotel was a base, and from experience of staying in other cities, we know it's rare to find a room with a view without paying a premium. The room was immacutely clean and despite others saying the hotel was a little 'faded' we did not agree, it was traditional in style, but well maintained. The bathroom only had a shower, but this wasn't too much of a problem for us, and the mirror was large and clear. The products were nothing special, but we didn't expect them to be. The only issue we had was the noise from dustcarts at 5am every weekday morning! However, we appreciate that the same would probably be experienced in every other metropolitan city, and it certainly wouldn't put us off staying here again.

The main bonus of this hotel is that it is very central. We walked to most places from the hotel, including to Fenway Park (35mins) for a stadium tour and TD Gardens (15mins) to watch a Celtics game. On occasion, we did use the T, Boston's underground system, and there are a choice of stops within a couple of minutes of the hotel. Fanuiel Hall and Quincey Market are 10mins walk away, and offer lots of opportunities for shopping and eating. For breakfast, there is a Starbucks on the same road as the hotel (and on every corner, of every street!) and Brueggers Bagel Bakery, where we ate breakfast on three of the five mornings we were in Boston! Great bagels, coffee and juice that didn't break the bank. At the advice of Trip Advisor reviews, we made our way to Paramount on Friday morning and were not disappointed, pancakes to die for!

The hotel is also in short walking distance from a CVS which meant we could grad drinks and snacks easily, as well as a 7-Eleven, large Macy's and a shoe warehouse where I spent an hour trying to choose what to buy! For dinner, we would recommend Back Deck in West Street, which we went to twice and the service and food was great. Everyone raves about Mike's Pastry in North End, and we saw so many people carrying boxes, but didn't make it in there because the queues were always out the door!

We didn't use the hotel's restaurants or bars, mainly because we felt they were overpriced and out of our budget, however we did get a take-out Boston Cream Pie from the Morsel cafe at the front of the hotel, and it was very good!

We couldn't fault the Omni Parker House and would certainly recommend it to friends and family. Definitely join the Select Guest programme, it's free and has great benefits.

Room Tip: A high floor, away from the lifts would probably be the quietest.

Visited Boston for our anniversary over St Patty's Day and stayed 4 nights at the Omni Parker House. I try to stick with Omni Hotels due to the loyalty program and while we had a good experience, in comparing this Omni to others, there are areas for improvement. The loyalty ambassador was great and had rose petals on our bed when we arrived. They also delivered champagne and chocolate covered strawberries after our arrival and a hand written card welcoming us on our first night. Very appreciated, love the personal touch!

The hotel has a great location along the freedom trail and we were able to walk everywhere. The only time we took a taxi was to and from the airport and after the Celtics game when we came out and it was snowing! This FL girl was not prepared to trek throught the snow.

One of the things that could have been better was the turn down service. During this particular stay upon returning for the evening, I couldn't tell if it had been done yet or not. I really enjoy when they fill the ice bucket, actually turn down the bed, dim the lights and put the music on something relaxing. For me, this is a much nicer way to come "home" in the evening to relax after running around the city all day.

Another thing that stood out were the very thin walls. Although I had read about that in the reviews before we went I figured it couldn't be that bad. Well, it can! We could hear every word of every conversation that happened on either side of us. Knowing this, I think the hotel should also not allow construction to occur in the hotel, on our floor, at 0800 in the morning.

The other thing that was a challenge was the extremely small bathroom that had a pedestal sink. There was no room to put anything such as toiletries, make up, etc. I reverted to keeping my stuff on the nightstand and even sitting on the floor in front of the full length mirror in the room to try to apply my make up, dry my hair, etc.

There are a couple of lounges on site and we thought they were a nice place to have a cocktail and snack before bed. The staff was quick to bring us different pillows when requested and were helpful in holding our luggage both before and after checkout. All in all, I think the loyalty ambassador and hotel location is what made this trip more than average for us.

First of all the staff here were very attentive and helpful. I didn't walk past a staff member that didn't say hello, good morning, or may I help you with anything. The room was clean, the bed was sooo comfy, and the pillows must be what angels in heaven sleep on. The rooms and restaurant were pricy but you can't expect less when you are in the Heart of Boston and get the service they provide. My only complaint is that wifi did not come with the room. You could pay extra or go to the lobby but it would have been convenient to have it in our room at no additional charge considering the price of the room. Otherwise, excellent place to stay!!!
