Had a fun time here but prefer George's Island over Spectacle.

This used to be a dumping ground. Now the city turned it into a beautiful place to visit. There are docks you can bring your boat to and beaches (although rocky) where you can swim. It's also a fun place to kayak to or take a ferry boat to during the summer.

We headed out to Spectacle on a rainy afternoon, hoping to see the harbor and eat a bit of chowder at the Summer Shack. Spectacle is easy to get to via the Boston Ferry Center, at Long Wharf, they drag out the trip there by heading into the inner harbor first, a narrated tour of Boston's historical sites. The welcome center was indeed welcoming. When we realized the Shack was closed, we had a moment of panic because my friend was injured, and couldn't manage the climb up the hill quickly enough to meet the return ferry. An astute ranger offered us a ride on the electic vehicle, so we got a personalized guide, and incredible views of the Boston skyline as we navigated the trails. The walk would be manageable by most able bodied folks, and there is an incredible collection of sea glass at the beach, owing to the island being the former dump for the city, instead now a jewel in the harbor. If you start in the morning, can hit several islands by ferry.

I visited the island for a work outing on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised by how pretty the island was. I parked for $35 at the Boston Harbor Garage located @ 299 Milk Street. I could have found a cheaper place to park but this was located right next to the aquariam and warf so I opted to pay the high price for the convenience. The ferry was on-time, clean and comfortable. We arrived after a 10-15 minute ride which offered beautiful views of the harbor. The welcome center has island history, photo's, beach glass, restrooms and snack shack. There are a dozen or so picinic tables right near the welcome center and also scattered up the winding path to the top of the island. The views from the island were amazingly pretty on a perfect summer day! I think the island offers something for everone, a small beach area for swimming or exploring the shoreline, nature hiking trails with beatiful views, comfortable chairs located at the welcome center if you just want to enjoy the view in the shade and a snack shack for something to nibble on.

I would recommend bringing a bottle of water, towel or picininc blanket, sunblock, camera, binocculars, light jacket and if you are up for hiking sneakers because the paths are uphill/gravel. Enjoy!

Great ferry ride to an island in Boston Harbor. Park rangers are helpful and provide tours and information on island activities with no extra charge for any activities offered. There is a lovely, little beach area/changing station just to the left as you walk toward the Pavillion, so bring towels if you plan to indulge. This is a "carryon/carry off" island, meaning that there are no garbage receptacles so anything you bring onto the island must be carried off. It is a good idea to bring water or other drink items/snacks with you during warm weather. Bathrooms are very clean and there is a small food/drink stand providing some decent, simple fare (i.e. salads, vegiburger, hamburgers, grilled chicken breast on a bun) and a big area with picnic tables. Chairs overlooking the water and ferry dock are situated on a well covered veranda which remains surprisingly cool on a warm August day. Views of Boston are beautiful. Great little getaway that the kids will love as much as the adults.
