“great for a short stay, in a great location, staff was great”
Reviewed May 25, 2009

Hotel 140 is a great purchase if you get it at the right price. Its in an awesome location on Clarendon St. The subway stops are a short walk from the hotel. The hotel staff was extremely helpful with all questions I had. Overall, the room was nice, but the bathrooms were small. The shower was extremly small and when you turn on the shower in sprayed into the bathroom, so beware of that. I would feel bad for a heavier person to try to shower in the showers, but for me it was fine. Parking wasn't as bad as other hotels in Boston $27 for the night. Make sure you get your parking stub validated by the hotel otherwise you'll pay over $50 for the night. The continental breakfast wasn't bad. You have the option of a bottle of juice, water, or soda as well as a muffin or croissant. Thats all I need in the morning. I was very satisfied for the price I paid, and I would go back.

This hotel has a great location, nicely decorated but small rooms, and everything you need. Great value. However, there is virtually no soundproofing between rooms or between the room and the hallways. Any conversation seems to reverberate from room to room. Also, at night, the light from the hallway shone into my room. Bottom line: great room, but a bad night's sleep.

I stayed at this hotel while attending a conference. For the money, the location and service can not be beat. The rooms and restrooms are small, but that is what I expected from the reviews. I would stay here again in the future. This is the best value in downtown Boston.

Heard about this hotel from a friend and boy was she right! My schedule was tight and the staff was more than helpful with a late check in as well as very helpful getting me around town. Room was very clean and comfortable, will be staying here whenever I am in Boston.

Yes--we've graduated! Over the past 5 years, I've stayed in 11 Boston area hotels, for college-related activities and moving daughter in/out of Northeastern Univ and surroundings. This is the first one that I can say I will return to (now that she has decided to work and settle in Boston.)
This hotel is great if you plan to walk or use the T. If you need a car to get around/transport child and belongings for multiple trips to Bed/Bath/Beyond, etc., then check out the Days Inn Soldier Field or Ramada in Cambridge for the easy access and free parking. (Good luck with the driving in Boston...)
If you are looking for a central location with very easy access to the T (2 stops within 3 blocks), and in easy walking range to Boston Commons, shopping, and restaurants, this is a great place to stay. The rooms are simply furnished, but modern with comfortable bed, towels, shower, and any amenity you might want, just no frou-frou or fancy tdecor.
Continental breakfast on-site was a nice extra--easy to grab coffee and croissant on your way out the door. Front Desk allowed early check-in and stored my luggage after checkout for a late day flight.

I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel. The lobby is charming and clean. The hallways are bright and colorful (not dark and dingy like I just read in a previous review).
We stayed in the Wellesley room and thought it was perfect for our purpose.
This is a boutique hotel, not the ritz.
I'm giving the room a 4 because the mattress does need to be replaced, but still comfortable enough to sleep on.
The bathroom and room was spotless. I knew that the room and bathroom were small, and we were fine with that.
The cafe downstairs was available for breakfast. We got the complimentary coffee and muffin.
Would we go back? In a heartbeat!

I won in a fundraising raffle a night at this "boutique hotel" and tkts to the Lyric Stage, which is located on the mezzanine level of this hotel. While the thought that they converted the original YWCA to a "boutique hotel" in the Back Bay was charming, the reality was disappointing. The facade and lobby of the Y wasn't changed much, which was OK, but the "Wellesley Suite" we had was tiny. In fact it was a small BR with a tiny sitting area (about 4x4') and a small bathroom that has no tub. The old fireplace was still there, but oddly empty, and the TV was maybe 19" max. Worst was the lumpy bed, which should have been replaced a few years ago. While the room was very clean, the hallways were creepy, dank, and stuffy. The "breakfast" that was included consisted of 1 muffin and a cup of coffee - limit 2 items! While this is a very good value for the budget minded for the Back Bay, the comfort level of the room and hotel was below par, less than what you'd get in a chain like Hampton Inn, or even Days Inn. Even the front desk was staffed with personnel who couldn't quite handle the reservation or the paperwork - maybe we'll get a bill for the room that was complimentary...
