“Good basic hotel”
Reviewed October 18, 2011

Stayed here with friends during September 2011 to find a good comfortable hotel. The location was quite good for the the city park and most of the local amenities, bars and restaurants. The desk staff were very welcoming and helpful whenever possible and overall we had a pleasant stay.

On the downside, the rooms were quite cramped and there was no restaurant other than a cafe style diner on the ground floor but on the upside Thornton's cafe was only a 5 - 10 minute walk away. Be prepared to wait for a table here. It is quite small and very popular but the food is worth it.

Recommendations: Hotels in Boston itself are quite expensive so don't expect too much for your money and that just about sums up the situation. Good if you are on a budget. Not good if you enjoy all the trimmings.

Room Tip: Pay more for your accomodation

The hotel was clean and well located for Boston and Back Bay. There is an excellent good value cafe on the ground floor perfect for cheap breakfasts. There is also a good restaurant (Post 340) across the road. Staff on reception were helpful though I did find it annoying that they kept answering their phones when talking and dealing with me; it would have been easier to sort out any questions if i'd dialled down from the room!

There is one thing, however, that I found annoying. Shortly before my stay I got an email from the hotel manager welcoming us and seeing if anything could be done before our visit. Whilst I thought this a nice touch, I noticed another email address was copied in to the email, one that I did not recognise and thought looked a bit suspect. Since then I've had a number of spam emails, one of which is from a Boston based company. I never give away my email address unless I have to and never sign up to newsletters etc. It's therefore no doubt in my mind that this suspect email address is responsible.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel 140 in early October. We were just in town for two nights to do a bit of sightseeing (and eating!). Neither of us had been to Boston before so we were looking for a nice, clean hotel that was convenient to everything we wanted to do, however, we didn't want to blow our budget. Hotel 140 was a great compromise in the Back Bay area. It was cheaper than other hotels nearby with more known names, but for the money provided a clean room with a comfy bed and flat screen television. The bathroom and shower were pretty small, but I wasn't expecting a luxury hotel, so we made do. The service was excellent and the staff were professional and courtious. I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay for the price and area!

Room is small without saying, but lack most of the ammenities a half decent hotels should have. There is no place for soap placement, have to leave it on the floor. Mimnimum number of lights; and dimly lit. Minimum of hooks in the bathroom, 1, to hang cloth, towel etc. Phone does not work. Every time youcall front desk it seems the operator hangs up on hearing any human voice. Double bed stuck at the corner and one has to craw over the other to get in and out of bed. Furnishing is 60ish, mattress soft and dip in the middle.

Room Tip: go somewhere else

Dear Josh L.,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback regarding your recent stay at Hotel 140. I deeply regret that we did not meet your expectations. Hotel 140 offers quaint and intimate rooms in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay that reflect the boutique style of the hotel itself. Each of these rooms is equipped with high quality amenities, soap dishes and towel rods. I am truly sorry if these items were not in your room. We have done a thorough walk through of our rooms to ensure another guest does not meet with the same situation.

We are also proud to offer standard amenities such as refrigerators (wow) and coffee makers in each and every guest room as well as complimentary high speed internet and discounts to many local events and vendors, available exclusively to our guests.

We have been renovating and updating the style and services the hotel offers continuously since August. Many rooms are getting new beds and other furnishings. Your feedback is instrumental in helping us determine what is needed to provide a memorable experience for each and every guest.

Thank you again for your feedback. We sincerely hope that you will visit us again in the future. Please feel free to reach out to me personally to arrange your future travel needs here in Boston.

Sincerely,
Emily Antonelli

Dear Michael K,

Thank you for posting your comments on trip advisor regarding your stay at Hotel 140. I am sorry the size of the room you were initially checked in to was not what you were expecting. I was very pleased to see that you did get upgraded from a Superior Queen to a Superior King room the next day by our wonderful guest service representatives as you were promised. I am certain the rest of your stay will be pleasant and will exceed your expectations. I urge you to contact management directly if you should encounter anything other than exemplary service while staying at Hotel 140.

Don't go here if you need spacious, luxurious digs..... Do go here if you 're wanting a nice room, great location, no frills experience. The cafe was an affordable spot to grab a bite on your way for a day of touring (cheaper and just as good as the Panera down the street!) The location was perfect for being able to see the city (right around the corner from the "T") and stopping in to get ready for great food that is just minutes away (or a quick ride on the 'T.) The bedspeard was a bit "dated" and the view wasn't stunning, but everything that matters to me - cleanliness, convience, etc.. was perfect.
P.S. If you drive- there is a garage @ 100 Clarendon. Go online and print the coupon if available- It saved us $36 on a 3 day stay.

Dear Pharmgirl...

Thank you for your candid post regarding your recent stay at Hotel 140. I am happy to hear that we met your expectations. We are fortunate to be located in the Back Bay area where entertainment and dining options are plentiful and within easy walking distance of the hotel. Being near two major T locations is also a definite plus when deciding where to stay when visiting the Boston area. The hotel also provides discounted parking coupons to all guests who check in so that they can receive the same discounts at the parking garage you did. We look forward to serving you again the next time you are in the Boston area.

We were very ha.ppy with our stay at Hotel 140. We priced lots of other hotels before choosing this one. All were much more expensive than this one. Our rate was around $150.00/night. Our family stayed at the Raddison a few blocks away and paid $250.00. The staff was VERY helpful. The room was small but spotless clean and had all the needed amenities...mini fridge, decent tv, tub/shower, coffee maker, hair dryer, good sheets, plenty of pillows, chairs. We had a king sized bed. We reserved a double bed but were upgraded when we checked in which was fantastic! We had a handicapped room which had a nice large bathroom. Most of the bathrooms are probably not that big. A great feature is the restaurant in the hotel. Must be good b/c there were lots of locals there. Deli-like food. This place's location is within walking distance of basically everything you want to see in Boston. Will stay here again for sure!
