As a Boston native, I can attest to the quality of the venerable Vose Galleries, the oldest art gallery in Åmerica still in family hands. The gallery itself is housed in a large town house devoted to displaying paintings (sculpture too) within its rooms and along its staircases and hallways. The inventory consists largely of 18, 19, 20 C. American painters, but the gallery has been developing its modern art collection as well. It is a pleasant gallery in which to browse, rather like a small and very comfortable museum where you will find knowledgeable but not intrusive assistance.
