Mike's gets all the attention but Modern has a fantastic selection and their Italian pastries are delicious. On Saturday, a group of us had lunch down the street and stopped here to get some goodies for later. The line was long but moved quickly and it's less chaotic than Mike's. As a group we all chose a few different things...cannoli (made to order and several varieties), ricotta pie, sfogliatella ("lobster tails"), napoleons and baba rum cakes (we skipped the 'Americana' items, but the cupcakes and fruit tarts looked amazing). Everyone was really happy with their choices and we sampled bites of some others. The staff was quick and friendly. Definitely a place I'll go back to.

Stepped in, waited in a huge line, made a rushed order of macaroons, boston cream pie, red velvet cupcakes, canolli's and more to go. Took our goodies back to our hotel. Two of our kids ate just the chocolate decorations off the top of the same pastry-nothing else. Within 40 minutes, both were ill. Suspicious. I dont know what the 'old world recipes' are that this bakery uses nor will I ever. We threw our pastries away after the kids reactions. Perhaps it was just a bad batch of chocolate. But dealing with two children breaking out in hives, swelling up and getting sick-freaking out rushing around finding medicine in a strange town on vacation-not worth it.

Btw-my children are not allergic to nuts or dairy and eat chocolate and frostings without issue. But there had to be something in that chocolate for one child to start complaining of not feeling well, swell up and get sick-then have the other child do the exact thing within 10 minutes of his sister.

Saturday night in Boston, weather was awesome and the people came from everywhere. We stood in line for about 20-25 minutes, but rather than complain of the wait, we enjoyed talking with others in line, which passed the time quickly. Staff was running ragged all evening and they seemed to treat each customer with the same happy smile and courteous service. We ordered the chocolate dipped cannoli with ricotta and pistachio nuts, along with a key lime tart and apple square. Each cannoli is made to order and doesn't sit on the shelf waiting. It was priced well at about $11 for all. The cannoli shell was incredible and the rest was just as great. Well worth the wait; both for the pastries and the company of others in line. Definitely not one to pass if you're a fan of cannoli.

The concierge at our hotel had grown up in the North End and told us to go to this smaller Italian bakery. Great advice! We tried the cannolis which were crisp, rich and creamy. Delicious! So many wonderful choices!

We went here after dinner after receiving recommendations. Purchased the chocolate dipped freshly filled cannoli with chocolate chips and a chocolate/peanut butter nougat confection. Both were delicious. I saved them for breakfast the next morning and couldn't stop eating them!! So many choices!
