From the Embassy Suites, it is a short walk to the restaurant. At lunch, we took a walk to confirm it is walkable from the hotel and saw a worker outside. He opened the door, thinking we were entering but told him we would be back for dinner.

We ordered a mushroom pizza as well as a half carafe of the house red wine. I didn't realize that this location did not have salads (due to space issues, as told to us by the employee we met at lunchtime). The pizza was enough for the two of us....it was very flavorful but a bit overcooked as the crust completely crumbled.

The restaurant has been around for over a 100 years and makes a good pizza, just not my favorite. The website indicates Santarpio's has the best pizza according to Boston Magazine. We have tried Frank Pepe's and Tripoli as well. Of those, I prefer Tripoli (maybe growing up in the area, I like it better, but the crust has a bit of chewiness in the center, how we like it).

This restaurant is a one of a kind classic. Barbecue over the wood fire and pizza are all they serve and that is all they have to. The sausage and lamb barbecue are addictive (be sure to order the combo - one skewer of each). It comes with hot cherry peppers and giant slices of perfectly crusty bread. Their pizza is award winning (Best of Boston and many more) year after year. It is all fantastic but for a real treat (as long as you aren't on your first date) try the white garlic pie - to die for! The cast of characters that work here are straight out of central casting - with their gritty Boston accents and no-nonsense style of service. The atmosphere is 100% original - far from anything fancy but absolutely works. This is one "joint" you do not want to miss.

Being in this spot, in the moment, is a little bit like being in a time machine back to the '40s or '50s - simple, really good pizza, with no pretense. Not fancy, just an authentic family restaurant...

Santarpio's has "it." Not sure exactly what "it" is but it's got something to do with a pizzeria that's been around for a long time with employees that have worked there for a long time and where people have been eating really good pizza for a long time. Don't let "East Boston" discourage you from putting it on your food itinerary. Hop on the Blue Line and it's the first stop across the water. In my opinion, Pizzeria Regina in the North End is the best but Santarpio's is a very close 2nd.

A trip to Boston just wouldn't be complete without a visit to Santarpios pizzeria in East Boston.
Although they built a second one up Route One, check out the original.
Best pie you'll find anywhere! The waiters and waitresses have been there forever and the BBQ lamb is to die for. The regulars know to ask for a glass of pepper juice and a hunk of the delicious baked bread to dunk it in. Try it, you'll love it.
