“Ambivalent impressions”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2014

Went for dinner midweek, with four friends to celebrate a special occasion. The ambiance was appropriate for fine dinning but the noise level very energetic. We had to shout at each other to be heard. The menu was interesting. The appetizers included a salmon tartar dish which was surprisingly quite spicy however very tasty. On the other hand the Foie gras was a disaster. A thick brown sauce on a soggy brioche overwhelmed the expected elegance of Foie Gras. Most of us chose a wonderfully prepared halibut for a main course. The wine list is outstanding. The service was intermittent and inattentive, unfortunate, given the reputation of this establishment. Overall we had a pleasant evening among friends despite the drawbacks. We will probably not return given the poor value for the price.

“Excellent food and ambience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2014 via mobile

We had an excellent meal at this restaurant. The food was well cooked and presented. The staff were pleasant and attentive. In my view, it deserves it's string position in the TA rankings. Car parking is non-existent, but they do have a good valet parking service. The entrance is a bit cluttered, and the process for greeting and seating guests seems a bit haphazard.

“Brunch on a dreary Sunday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2014 via mobile

We visited Mistral for brunch on a bleak Sunday in February. Loved the fact that there was valet service although we were fortunate to get a spot right outside. The room is lovely with a warm ambience. There was quite a good crowd and a definite buzz in the air as diners of all ages enjoyed their meals. We shared the pineapple carpaccio for appetizer. So refreshingly delicious. My husband had the confit of duck hash and I had the salmon Eggs Benedict. Both were prepared well. The service was pleasant and attentive. Mistral is pricey for brunch but given the location, atmosphere, food and overall experience, we thought it was definitely worth the money.

“Mixed Bag”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2014

I have reviewed this restaurant before and always given it great reviews but my wife and i had dinner there last night and it wasn't what you usually expect from Mistral. For starters, the starters were not great. the tuna tartare was watery, salty and it seemed like there was a lot of 'filler' in the tuna. my wife had the seared fois gras. it came perched atop some kind of bread tower that was not very tasty and too much bread to begin with. the presentation was less than attractive but to make matters worse, the fois gras had a couple of strings of gristle running through it that made it very difficult to cut and as a result, it turned to mush by the time she could get a knife through it. we might have sent it back but the biggest problem of the night was the waiter. some people just don't belong being waiters. again, most of the waiters at Mistral are very good to great but this guy was the most inattentive waiter i have ever encountered in a fine restaurant. slow service; never once asked if we enjoyed any of the plates; never asked if i wanted another glass of wine, even though it sat there empty for 15 minutes before someone cleared the glass. i didn't want another glass or i would have asked but really. he wasn't a mute because he happened to know the people sitting next to us and they got the royal treatment. In fairness to the restaurant, i always have the rack of lamb and it did not disappoint. it was excellent. still the best anywhere. my wife had the cornish hen which she fully enjoyed. we shared the carrot cake which was fabulous. so all in all, it was a pretty good night but when you spend $250 to $300 for a dinner for two, you expect more. I'm a pretty generous tipper but when the bill came i had all i could do to give even a 15% tip.

“Just a "Nice" Dining Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2014

There are so many good restaurants in town, it's hard to have an experience that really stands out. I thought the food was above average, but comparable to other places. The service was outstanding and the wine list reasonable. I also thought it was quite loud and just didn't offer anything that truly made it unique. It was fine and I'd certainly go back again, but had hoped it would be a bit more memorable.
