Amrheins is the place to go to experience South Boston. Go with a local to act as your people tour guide. Or use the waiter. The place will be filled with local politicians, priests, a family celebrating something, other locals and the occasional tourist like me.
There are two sides - the bar with the required big screen TV's, which is loud and bustling. The dining room is quieter with no TV's but be prepared for many happy conversations going on around you. The night I was there a group of 60 and 70 something, black suit, white shirt pols stood in the corner making a back room deal.
The food is home cooking served by waiters who know their craft well. The menu is good but not great but it really does not matter. The place is just fun.
It is a short walk from the many great new hotels around the new convention centre. You can go to Mortons or visit Amrheins and get a better perspective of the city.
