“Good Dim Sum Lunch”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

Good, traditional dim sum lunch in this well appointed Chinese restaurant.

Service was good -- our large group was seated at the table on the stage and, though it was a later lunch, there were still carts moving around with a good selection.

As usual, for most Chinese restaurants, don't expect "service with a smile" from the cart vendors but we're fine with prompt and helpful.

It's probably been a decade since this restaurant had a full makeover and it's starting to show in some of the little stuff, e.g., washrooms, walls, decorations, etc.

Warning: parking (and driving) in Boston's Chinatown is a nightmare unless you're used to what it's like in China itself!

“Try a restaurant across the street.”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

Place almost empty, but the place across the street, which or local Chinese friend highly recommended, would have had a 30m wait. (Sorry, forgot the name of the place across the street.)

We should have just waited!

We ordered a a variety off dishes and it all tasted the same, and not in a good way.

I read later that best food was more classical chinese and not in the menu. BUT they never even mentioned that to Ourour friend, who is obviously native born Chinese.

“There's a reason you're the only one there..”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

I read about the China Pearl on the Boston Chinatown website and thought it sounded good - a historical place that had been open since the 1960s! Must be good, right? Wrong. When we walked in at 7:00 pm, we were the only ones there...in July, the height of tourist season.
First, the décor was old and tired...the lighting was too bright and the music (some modern top 40 Chinese music) was irritating. Something more classical, traditional or soothing in Chinese would've been great! The waiter seemed annoyed that we had arrived. He took us to our table and for the rest of the evening, hovered over us...not exactly talking to us or asking if we wanted anything, but hanging out near pour table in the middle of the floor. Strange.
But all that could've been overlooked if the food had just been good! The menu was far to extensive to make a choice, so I went with the pu pu platter. It was awful. Hoe do you mess up spring rolls? And the flavor of the little ribs triggered my gag reflex. I SO wanted to like this place and have a wonderful experience and was so disappointed that I didn't like anything. I am actually pretty easy to please, so this place must have been baaad.
I noticed when we were walking around Chinatown after our meal, many of the other restaurants were full of people dining...Chinese people who know where to go to get the good stuff. Wish I had paid attention earlier....never again.

“Used to be much better”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

Used to eat here all the time, but the quality definitely has gone down. The selections haven't been as great as before. Some things are still really good like the braised eggplant/tofu and the salt and pepper shrimp.

“Dim Sum..... First time there, will be sure to go back!!”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

On Christmas day we decided to try something different, so did a lot of other people. This place was jamming. Took about 40 minutes to wait in line, our ## was called and we were placed at a table just the right size for our party of 3. From the start we watched as the carts went by with the different items. There we so many choices, of the things we ordered there was only one we pushed away, our fault for not finding out what it was - but then again I could not understand a word the lady was saying. In addition to the carts moving around there was a buffet table with so many others yummy treats, my favorite was the steamed mussels with black bean sauce. Actually everything was excellent. Stay away form the Scorpion Bowl cocktail, I was shocked by the price, no prices on the drink menu so beware. Will definitely go again.
