“Perfect spot for quick overnight, TD Garden event”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

My husband and I stayed here Fri night 11/24 for a last minute getaway as we had tickets for the Celtics game that night. We did a quick search for hotels near the TD garden center and the Onyx came up. The spot could not have been better! Literally right around the corner from the venue for the game. Also, we got their at check-in time ( 3pm) and Fanueil Hall was also a quick walk from the hotel, so we decided to stroll around there before we grabbed some dinner. The staff at the hotel was very friendly, rooms were smallish but perfect for our needs and decorated very nicely. Loved the bed/ comforter.......... so nice!! Went to the Ruby room for an appetizer and drink after the game, very nice spot and atmosphere. Also, had breakfast there in the morning prior to checkout, food was good, prices reasonable. So, very nice hotel, great service would definitly recommend!!

We are a stones throw away from the Garden (if you have a good arm), so we are definitely the perfect spot. Thanks for the great review! This is going on the bulletin board in the employee break room!

I really liked everything about this place. The decor is sharp and modern. Room was spacious. Comfotable bed. Excellent complimentary wine at 5 pm in the colorful bar. The hotel is in a perfect location, close to the Freedom trail, Fannueil Hall, ect. We are runners and the hotel provided a good map of running routes that began right at the hotel door. The hotel is not cheap, but I belive it is good value.

As an avid runner myself, a good map is important when you are in unfamiliar territory! Thanks for the great review!

First the good: the room was well furnished and comfortable. If a little small. The TV was enormous, and frankly was a bit too large, as it ended up dominating the room. Otherwise it was a good room.
However, i slept on the 4th floor, overlooking the street at the front. This street appears to be somewhere where trucks come to park up for the night. They leave their engines running whilst they are parked. I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights, and each night was woken at 3 by trucks running diesel engines outside. This made my stay intolerable. The staff were totally ambivalent to this.
Otherwise the hotel was at best average. There's no atmosphere in the downstairs. The reception is tiny, and very cramped. They shut down the lift for an inspection right at the time when most people were trying to leave for breakfast, or to get on with their day.
All in all. i would not recommend this place. The location isn't great. The price is high. The rooms are small and tired in terms of decor. And the noise is unbearable.

Room Tip: If you have to stay here, ask for a room at the back and as high as possible (assuming that they don...

Thanks for the candid feedback. I wish we didn't have some of the city noises or as I like to call them "urban rythyms" that we do, so I apologize your stay wasn't more enjoyable. As for the elevators, they were shut down for state mandated inspections. I know the timing wasn't great, but it is necessary to ensure everything operates as it should (for all of our safety!).

The rooms are a little pricey, but worth it. Great location and access to downtown Boston, Waterfront, and Garden. The service from the desk and concierge staff is top notch. They helped me rent a car for day (delivered and picked up at hotel) and provided many useful recommendations on dining etc..

I agree with others that this hotel is in a great location. The staff were nothing but nice and helpful as well. My only issue was that the hotel seemed a bit worn, and the carpeting and upholstered pieces were definitely older. The chair had obvious staining and spots and the carpet in our room had obvious discoloration from years of use. The bathroom was clean and overall the room was nice though, Luckily my husband is active duty military and we got the government rate. I would not have been happy to have paid over $300/night for this room.

First off, thank you to your husband for his service, that's awesome! Secondly, your comments about the "worn" upholstery is duly noted. We have a plan in place to fix this, unfortunately if I shared it with you now, this message would self destruct in 3, 2, 1....

Kimpton Hotels do a great job - we have stayed in four. The boutique hotels usually have small rooms, but a lot of character. The Onyx is just a block from the stadium/ train to Harvard/ hop on-hop off bus and 3 blocks from the Freedom Trail. Probably not great to be walking around at night, take a taxi back from late-night events.

We spent a weekend here after a week at two other properties, one a Bed and Breakfast, in the Boston area. The staff were welcoming and helpful as we arrived carting luggage from the T in the rain! My husband and I are both Kimpton In Touch (the loyalty program for this chain) and we had one night here free. The second night's rate was competitively priced with other hotels of this caliber in Boston. There was a breakfast buffet which was cold cereal, fruit and some hot entrees such as eggs and hash browns, which was priced according to whether the cold or the hot food was chosen. We found all the fruit very fresh and continually replenished and had an excellent granola. The complimentary coffee and T in the lobby (where the buffet also was set up) had soy milk! A very nice touch. We had a very late dinner in the lobby bar, The Ruby Room, which was very good. They stopped serving food at 11:00 p.m. and we got in at 10:30 p.m. from a cocktail reception on the other side of town. I am always amazed and impressed at how thoughtful, patient and genuinely nice the Kimpton staff are and this hotel was no exception. The T and the North Train Station are in a very short walking distance. The Freedom Trail and all the historic sites are also very doable by foot. One thing that could be improved was the lighting in our room, which was not very bright. However, the room itself was lovely.
