Myhusband and I just got back from a 29th anniversary long weekend at the Onyx. I mentioned the occasion when I booked the room. When we checked in the staff congratulated us and told us something special would arrive for us that afternoon. It was champaign and chocolate covered strawberries! It was the perfect start to our stay. The staff was also very helpful in finding restaurants in any part of town we were interested in. Free wine tasting every night, attentive wait staff, a cute dog to cuddle in the lobby. It was great. The room was smallish - compact but very comfortable. Reminded me of our room in Rome, Italy. The location is perfect - you can walk almost anywhere, and the "T" is close by if you need it. But, it's the staff that raises my rating to excellent.

The Onyx was perfectly located in the the equally perfectly walkable City of Boston. My wife and I loved the proximity to the North End, Beacon Hill and Charles Street, as well as the Boylston Area. We actually had a nice stroll all the way to the South End for art and food. The hotel itself was really just a launch pad to the surrounding area, but it had all we required, including 5 p.m. cocktails. The property is a little dimly lit and about 10 to 15 years dated in decor, but the staff are friendly and helpful and the price was right on Snique-away.

The Onyx is located near the North End of Boston and close to the Garden ... you are able to walk to many great sites - the Freedom Trail, Aquarium, Quincy Market etc ... or take the "T" or a cab for all the other great spots in Boston. The staff were top notch and met or exceeded our expectations (and isn't that nice, for a change!) they even provided us with a goldfish for our two 8 year olds to enjoy while we stayed. The rooms have a small footprint so if you do bring your family members - small and or large - suggest that you get two rooms adjoining/connecting so you have enough space. We enjoyed our time at the Onyx and look forward to staying at one of her sister properties in NYC.

Just spent 12 days at the Onyx Hotel in Portland Street, Boston and cannot praise the staff and hotel more highly. Mum and Dad and two 16 year olds were made to feel very welcome by Michael and team on the desk- hugely knowledgeable about Boston and surrounds and a very pleasant and welcoming atmosphere is apparent. For families, I can really recommend the use of adjoining rooms behind a common access door, which can be opened by both room keys- allows privacy per room, but you can open up both room doors behind the access door too.
Portland Street in Boston is a good location for all the city has to offer- 3 mins walk to North Street Station, 10 mins to the North side ( great food!) and no more than 15 mins to either harbour or Boston Park. Tip- use the trains and the subway to get out and about. Taxis are not expensive by European standards too. If it's your first time to Boston, make sure you check out the weather and temperature forecast- walking can be great, but beware temperature extremes. It can get very hot and very cold. Great time and thanks to the great staff for a memorable stay, somewhat longer than expected courtesy of Hurricane Irene...

Room Tip: For families, ask for connecting rooms behind common access door.

We checked into the Onyx hotel fairly late at night, tired and ready to relax. The front desk person was so fantastic- friendly and welcoming- she even gave us wine to take up to our room, where we were suprised by a welcome fruit plate and nice note. My expectations were high at this point, I suppose that's why I was so disappointed in the lack of service given when our room was made up each day. The empty fruit plate remained in our room during the course of our 4 night stay and the coffee was never replaced- even after I left a note requesting more. I have never seen such poor housekeeping, which is too bad because they are doing some things so right. I wouldn't discourage anyone from staying here, but I would suggest speaking to the management right away instead of letting it slide, like I did, and then having a bad impression on departure.
