“Ok Ritz Carlton - but beware the external central a/C vent”
Reviewed June 2, 2012

Pretty mundane hotel with too informal front lobby staff, laughing and joking around. Got no sleep as my room looked out over a grassed terrace which had air con ducts pointing sky wards. No need to stay anywhere other than Boston Harbor Hotel in this city.

On a brief stay for a business trip, I found that Ritz-Carlton Boston had one service problem after another. The check-in desk was completely understaffed at 9pm, and no bellman was promptly available to bring luggage up. There was a burned out lightbulb on the desk lamp, and no knob at all on the floor lamp. Setting the (very complicated) alarm clock required a visit from an engineer who needed 5 minutes to figure it out himself. A room service order was delivered incomplete, and shoes to be shined and returned at 7am were returned closer to 7:20 --- and then only after a phone call. Given the high rate charged, this stay was not a good value at all.

The Four Seasons is a much better hotel in Boston, although it has the big disadvantage of not having stall showers (which the Ritz does).

We stayed here to celebrate my birthday in early May and this was our first and last Ritz stay. I chose this hotel with high expectations that were sadly completely missed.

It was truly an overall disappointment with the room, level of service, security, amenities, price, parking.

The room was overlooking the unfinished courtyard with the workers lounging around. Obviously they saw us and other guests. Our view was pretty much the courtyard and surrounded with buildings. Could not see anything beyond the other buildings.

The staff though professional, they were not knowledgeable of the area. Concierges gave conflicting directions to gas stations. Any Courtyard I've stayed at would be better than this Ritz. The lobby was dark, empty, and did not give a welcoming and safe ambiance. The music in the bar was loud with a handful guests (or were there the staff).

The hotel did not provide a safe and secured feeling. Anyone can walk up to the lifts and go to any floor without secured room keys.

The best thing about the hotel stay was "Kenny" the doorman. He's the only one who's knowledgeable and greeted us with smile.

Very, very, disappointing stay. I'd recommend the Westin Copley, Marriott Copley or if you don't mind staying slightly outside Boston, I'd highly recommend Boston Quincy. Very convenient access in / out of freeways, to the city (with the T). Look for my review of this hotel.

Surprise, surprise, surprise, one after the other. The Ritz on the Common, isn't on the Common, but a rather seedy side street. Gone is the Grande Dame facing the Common, the greeters, attentive door openers, service, fine dining, luxurious lobby. What remains- the name. We have stayed at Ritz Carlton's on several continents and this was the only one I can comment on so negatively never here again.

The staff at the Ritz, especially on the club level, are very professional and always helpful. Every time we come, my family and I are always greeted by friendly staff members. The club level is great to go to for breakfast and the pecan butterscotch cookies are delicious. The location is great and easy walking distance to Newbury Street. The street the hotel is located on, though, attracts quite a gust of wind that can get really chilly in the winter.

TIP: Avoid the restaurant recommendations, however. Last time they booked us a reservation, we were seated next to the kitchen and the service was not very good.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the park.

I remember when the Ritz Carlton Boston used to be at 15 Arlington Street and was a bit wary of the new location. However, it works fine. The doorman was pleasant and efficient. The check in process was smooth and painless. The room was nice and had a view of the Boston Common.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Boston Common
