Maria's has a authentic taste of pastries freshly made. They are also very helpful in giving suggestions on pastries. I love that they open early but hate that they also close early. It is more of a local bakery than a tourist trap. Also it is very close to the Haymarket stop.

Walk a little outside the Hanover Street tourist crush, past Salem on the Greenway and walk into Maria's. You want Lobster Tails? Hers are flaky, creamy decadence. The Amaretti (plain - I'm a purist) are the best in Boston. Ditto the cannolli, freshly filled when you order. The almond biscotti have a hint of cinnamon and are addictive. She makes all kinds of holiday specialties in addition to the standards. Friendly service and few lines - add in the amazing pastries and you have a winner.

I again took Michele Topors food tours of Boston's North End with tour guide & chef Jim and had a great afternoon. Very educational.. This is their first stop and the pastries and baked good are the most amazing. They don't let their cannolis sit around filled all day so the outside gets soggy like they do at Mike's. They fill them right as you get them or will pack the filling separately for later consumption so everything stays fresh. The Amaretti cookies in the refrig are soo super delish. I definitely prefer them soft to hard like the ones that come in the can. They have a few different flavors and enough to keep you happy and coming back for more. I'm going to get a clamshell this morning with a hot coffee before I leave town to head to Portland Maine... Don't miss this place!!

Maria's is located in the North End of Boston were many of the Italian restaurants are. Marias has a small seating area to enjoy your pastry and beverage. The location is just off the heavily traveled route. Hanover St and Salem street are the two principle streets from Atlantic ave and the Rose Kennedy Greenway, and Maria's is close to Salem Street. They are always friendly and answer questions about the pastry and even how they make them. I have been many times and find the pastry to be very fresh and delicious. The variety at Maria's may not be as extensive as the tourist trap Mikes Pastry, but the quality is better. If you are looking for a cannoli, skip the lines everywhere else and check out Maria's.

We didn't have a chance to try these until we got back to Napa! Stopped in right before closing. And there actually is a Maria, who has been in the business for a long time. Will definitely be ordering online for the holidays!
