“Run down area”
Reviewed December 7, 2012

This area used to be a very exciting neighborhood of department stores, Today there is only a Macys and a bunch of cheap clothing and jewelry stores, While the area is safe by day,it feels dangerous after 7:00PM and a bit so on Saturdays, so much so, that the Boston Police have a small police station right there,on the sidewalk...The 2nd oldest restaurant in Boston, famed Locke-Obers was here, and sadly closed after more than 160 years, in November,2012,partly becuase folks feel a bit uncomfortable in this neighborhood, by day and night.
.a lot of development is slated for this area to remove the blight and to bring regular people into the area once again.

“Lots of re-development going on”
Reviewed December 6, 2012

When Filene's Basement closed, Downtown Crossing went to pieces. Literally. When you look around after coming out of the subway station at Washington & Bromfield St., you might think you stepped into a war zone because of the 1/2 demolished buildings around you. It's been this way for several years now. It's like someone started tearing them down and then lost interest and moved on to something else. Borders Books shuttered its doors and so did a bunch of smaller shops a couple years ago. Gangs of loud, bad-tempered kids hang around at the street corners and inside doorways. I don't know if these are gang kids but factions of them are always squaring off against other factions. The cops are constantly walking and riding around trying to move them along but they aren't successful. Don't go there alone after dark because it's just plain dangerous.

There are some great stores around Downtown Crossing once you get away from Washington Street. Seriously, some really great businesses are within walking distance from DTC.

“Great Shopping!”

Love the shopping in this area! TjMaxx, Marshalls, DSW shoe warehouse, the corner mall. Always a treat. Definitely worth the visit. Great for nightlife too!

“Urban Renewal”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

They are working on it is all I can say. The Filene's store is closed and they stopped mid way in the rehab. If the economy ever bounces back it might be worth the time to see.

“Busy intersection”
Reviewed November 14, 2012

This is probably my least favorite area of Boston - most likely because it's the epitome of everything I despise about cities - it's busy, dirty, crowded, loud... There's lot of shops to go in and out of - I find myself here often to run into DSW, Macy's, a jewelry shop, or the like - but I try to get in and out as quick as possible. I just don't love it.
