“Not Worth the Money”

While the trip on the Ship from Boston Harbor was fine, I think there are probably better options elsewhere. We did the Boston Tea Party re-enactment cruise since we had 3 kids, but they were quite bored during the trip out. There was a lot of dead space where they really could have taken the opportunity to talk about things in and around the harbor to educate us about Boston's rich history. The tea party re-enactment was fine and the kept the kids interested, but that only lasted about 15 minutes. We also did one of the duck tours during our stay in Boston and that was so much better (for less $$). The driver there was so much more engaged and really kept our interest and was very informative. I feel at Tall Ships, they really miss out on this opportunity. I would not recommend this unless you really just want to sail one of these big sailboats for the sake of doing so.

Hi,

I'm sorry you did not enjoy your time aboard the Boston Tea Party sail. We have actually started to re-configure it so we are now doing it aboard our smaller vessel, the 67ft Wooden Coastal Schooner the Liberty Star. The Star does 1 1/2 hour sails, so this allows for more audience interaction! I hope you enjoyed the experience of being on a Tall Ship.

“Crew more interested in impressing each other”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2013

We booked a cruise for six on the Liberty for the evening sunset cruise. The young crew/staff were cheery, but did not explain a thing about the boat or the cruise or the islands we saw or the Boston Bay at all. They were much more interested in impressing each other and flirting with the one female crew member. There are not enough appropriate seats and no one seemed concerned that my 83 year old mother was barely able to stand as the boat turned and listed. The cruise was boring and extremely disappointing to say the least.

Hi Susan,

Thank you for choosing to sail with us. Our tours are more of the non-narrated, enjoy the beautiful sunset over Boston Harbor while having a glass of wine type of cruises, as opposed to the fully narrated tours that most ferries do. All of our deckhands are very knowledgeable about the Harbor and its surrounding areas, but please keep in mind sailing a 125 ft Tall Ship is a lot of work!

I'd like to offer you a chance to come with us on the Liberty Star for another sail. While we do have enough seating for all passengers, per US Coast Guard regulations, I can make sure you and Mom are first in line for the best seats in the house! Feel free to contact us at: Liberty@libertyfleet.com to take advantage of this. Thank you!

“B and B and cruise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

We were looking for a reasonably priced spot to stay in Boston (there aren't any!), but this fit the bill for a different type of place to spend the night. There were doing maintenance on the ships, so one of the bathrooms was closed, making it necessary to climb ladder to get to other area of ship to reach bathroom. Shower area is very small and shared, low water pressure due to maintenance. This was not disclosed when we called to book rooms. Staff was very friendly on the ships. Rooms are small and consist of two bunks, lovely woodwork throughout. Docked right next to New England aquarium, so you can visit the harbor seals first thing in the morning, and easy access to Quincy Market, and T stop. We had two children with us, and they had fun as this was definitely not your typical hotel. Also did the sunset cruise. Guests got to help raise the sails as we started out, there was very little breeze, so not a fast cruise, made it out as far as the airport, but did give a nice view of harbor in the evening.

While it was a lovely ship and a friendly crew they did not take the time to explain anything you were seeing in Boston Harbor. It would have been nice to have a little narrative. We were on the Boston Tea Party re-enactment cruise which you have to pay extra for and the there was only one actor not the entire re-enactment you were expecting. He was very informative however.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for sailing with us! I'm sorry you didn't fully enjoy the Boston Tea Party sail. We are in the process of trying some new things with it, so bear with us! If you are in the area please come back, and I'd recommend a sunset sail!

Best,

“Bit disappointing - certainly not up to description on website”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2013

We went on the Boston Tea Party sailing. The website gives the impression that the trip is very themed with lots of crew dressed up, a cannon being fired and kids getting the chance to take the helm. On our trip we had one actor who tried her best to tell the story and maintain everyone's interest while the crew talked loudly nearby, followed by just before the end the chucking over of the tea.

Really what it boiled down to was 2 hours round the harbour with no commentary (so we had no idea what we were passing), a chance to haul up the sails (which was fun), the actor's 10 minute talk on the history of the tea party in character (done well) and finally the chucking of fake bales of tea over the side. No-one on board seemed particularly excited by the experience but I'm sure it was better than one without the tea party bits.

I think the problem is that these cruises compete with ones with lively commentary and watching crew manage the sails without a commentary can't really compete.
