We just took our 7th trip with OAT but it may be our last. Things have changed and not for the better. They used to let you give them a credit card to hold the trip for 2 or 3 days. Not any more. If you need more time to decide even if it's later in the day they still will not hold the reservation beyond your telephone call and you can never call back the same person and get them on the phone. On top of that if you get a last minute "deal" they will not allow you to use your travel credits with them from previous trips. Our last minute "deal" was not even on the web site as apparently people canceled last minute. The disclaimer about not being able to use the credits that we had from another trip was buried in another section of the web site. I was told it is listed where the last minute deals are advertised but on our trip it was not because the trip was never listed on the web site AT ALL. After sending a letter and haggling with company officials they would not give in as their response was basically .....too bad read the rules.
The Northern Italy Dolomites Trip was good but far from great. OAT travelers who travel with them the most generally get the best rooms. On our trip many people had traveled more than our 7 trips with OAT, but somehow 2 newbies got a premium room in one of the well known hotels. OAT claims the hotel decides who gets these rooms based on what they send on to the hotel but somehow somewhere the skids were greased.
We complained to no avail.
We booked our airfare with them and stayed on in Venice 3 days doing what they call a "breakaway". However, while we were entitled to a free transfer to the airport they would not give us a free transfer into the City of Venice. The distances were almost the same. They said we had to go to the Airport and then make our way into Venice.
They would not even give us a free ride to the train station in Treviso which was 5 minutes away so we could take the train into Venice. They said take a cab even though they had 5 cabs leaving on the last day to the Airport.
On the last day they drove us on a bus for 3 or 4 hours and took us on a tour of an Apple orchard where it was at least 90 degrees out. Then gave us lunch and took us to a hotel in the middle of nowhere about 14 miles outside of Venice with nothing to do and then a farewell dinner. There was no time for the others not doing Venice post trip to catch a train and see a little of Venice since Treviso is maybe a half hour train ride. So basically the last day is a bus trip to nowhere and then they get rid of you the next morning even though we were within sniffing distance of Venice.
We stayed on in Venice for 3 days at an Air BnB. Cost plus meals and touring for the 2 of us was maybe $650.00 to $700.00. The OAT 4 day post trip to Venice was like $1800 per person! So do it on your own if you take this trip and if you want to see Venice.
Thank you for your feedback, which we take seriously. We will review our materials to be sure that all trip details are communicated clearly throughout the trip. We're sorry to hear that you were not happy with your experience.
This was an absolute amazing trip. We were so excited to view the Big 5. With great effort of our Guides, knowledgeable and enthusiastic, they sighted expertly these exquisite animals (Lions, Elephants, Cape Buffalos, Leopard and the Black Rhino). In some cases we were close enough to almost touch them. Of course this being impossible because of the predictable danger. Our Guides were expertly trained to our safety. Cheetah, Zebras, Hippos, Hyenas, Warthogs, Antelopes, Meerkats, and gorgeous Birds galore were exciting to spot as well!
Our Guides, educated through University and “Life Experience”, were “locals”. As we travelled we were impressed by the respect they received from other companies. By no means were they “newbies”. Instead they, on occasion, instructed other guides to location of animals or safety precautions.
We were immersed in the culture of Tanzania, Maasai, and other tribes, family life, schools and the SAFE WATER project left us with an appreciation for this young Republic. Tanzanians are kind, welcoming and appreciative of the US tourists. The opportunity to engage with them, adults and children alike was an unexpected highlight.
OAT supports “Safe Water” initiatives, several Schools, and many other programs. This Safari is not just a “Vacation” for Tourists. You become “Travellers”. Those who Do, Know.
I was taken out of my “Comfort Zone” on many occasions. My “Comfort Zone” has expanded!!!
Highly recommend this Tanzanian/Serengeti Safari with Overseas Adventure Travel.
The safari trip we did was an adventure of a lifetime. The trip was fabulous. The safari was like living The Lion King Movie for 14 incredible days. The first day was a parade of animals: giraffes, zebras, impalas, warthogs, a parade of elephants and on and on the animals came
Yesterday as we were going on the native boats “makioras” we were chased by giraffes a real life scenario of the Jungle Ride at Disneyland
What makes the OAT Safari different from the hundreds of other safaris was our incredible Tour/Program Director named SKU.While most people on safari see the same animals, what made Sku outstanding was his incredible Learning and Discovery Sessions on the History, Life, foods of the 3 countries we visited, his organization skills and his attention to the minute details
I sent an e mail and tried calling 3 times to book a trip and was on hold after an automated call for nearly 10-15 minutes each time and had to hang up. They also have false advertising and twice in the past when I called to book, had a different price than the one advertised. This likely portends similar experience down the road. So, I will take my business elsewhere.
Rbhar,
We are very sorry to hear that you were unable to reach one of our travel counselors. We understand your frustration. If you would contact us at media_inquiries@oattravel.com, we'd be happy to follow up to learn more about your concerns and to help with your upcoming travel. Thank you!
I'm about to take my 10th trip with OAT and while I've seen the negative postings, many of the folks taking tours with them are like me - having taken 5, 10, even 20 tours. That says something. If you are booking a trip, know that they offer first time travelers special savings when they were referred by a prior traveler. They also just announced that 10 people would get a $1,000 cash or travel credit when booking their first trip before August 15, 2019. That's worth knowing about (I think). My last OAT trip was to Mongolia (incredible) and my next will be to Columbia.
I have used this company to travel in Southern Africa. We would be the only group staying in the preserves with outstanding meals and up close experiences. I just returned from a small boat tour to Juneau & Sitka Alaska. Boat could hold 68 and we had 29. We kayaked around and through glaciaers and hiked up to touch them. We watched them calf in Glacier Bay. I will travel to Spain & Portugal with them next month. No more than 16 with an average of 14 people on this trip, not a bus load of 40.
