A beautiful, comfortable house in a great location. Jane and Ben were kind, very helpful, and provided a great breakfast every morning. It was much better than a hotel because of the level of comfort and the kindness of the hosts. Highest of recommendations.

We stayed for one week at the end of October, start of November. The house is just lovely. A beautiful airy town house full of lovely furniture and interesting artefacts. We were on the top floor, back room in a spacious, light, warm room. So cosy. We were so pleased we chose this B&B rather than a standard hotel.
Breakfast was plentiful. A choice of cereals and pastries, fruit, and just help yourself from the fridge! Excellent coffee and orange juice. Sometimes Ben joined us at breakfast which was an extra treat. He is an interesting, thoughtful man.
South End is a lovely area. We liked to walk round looking at the houses and the little green spaces. It's also easy walking distance to many interesting sites, and to the subway. We felt completely safe walking about at night too.
However the best thing was that we were there for Hurricane Charlie and for Halloween. Jane and Ben were so kind, inviting us to dinner because everywhere was closed because of the hurricane, and also then inviting us to join them for trick and treating on their front step. Their hospitality exceeded expectations by a long way.
Jane and Ben are a wonderful couple, incredibly interesting and generous.

Room Tip: Quiet area so I don't think noise would be a problem in any room. Rooms not en-suite but two a...

We spent three nights at the 1863 House in October. From the airport we got the T to Back Bay and then walked 8 or 10 minutes to teh B&B, which is just off Tremont St.
Ben met us, made us some tea and chatted for a while about Boston and what we could do. We were also offered use of museum cards etc. Ben showed us our room, which was on the top floor with a shared bathroom. The room was big and the bed comfortable. We had no problems with the shared bathroom. Got up second one day and had to wait to use it. No big deal.
The house is very well maintained and tastefully furnished and it was very enjoyable to arrive back in the evening. If Ben or Jane were around they always had time for a chat or a quick word. After sightseeing all day we sat and watched TV and had a beer and were joined by Jane who was excellent company.
Breakfast was fresh squeezed OJ, Tea/coffee, cereal, berries, yoghurt and biscotti. Very tasty indeed.
I don't think I can fault the 1863 House. We were made to feel very welcome and were relaxed during our three day stay.
I suppose I never write bad reviews but that just means I don't write about bad places. This is one of the best. Highly recommended if you are travelling to Boston.

Jane and Ben were very attentive and gracious hosts from our arrival to our departure. We had the rooms on the top floor (four levels no elevator) giving us good work out, but no one was complaining from the group (4 people). It was a scorcher during our stay and the window air conditioners had to work hard to keep the rooms comfortable. breakfast was healthy with a variety of fresh fruits every day. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. The location is very convenient, only a couple of minutes from the Prudential Center and the subway. We had lovely conversations with our hosts over breakfast, when they were around. All in all we enjoyed our stay at The 1863 House B&B and would gladly return on subsequent visits to Boston.

We are 2 seniors and we had a great stay for 2 nights in June 2012. The hosts are very hospitable and always ready for a chat (the very reason I stay in B&B). The room we had was large, air conditioned and with a comfortable bed and several chairs to sit. The only negative was having to take our cases up 3 flights of stairs. Its ideally suited to public transport and there are several good restaurants within walking distance.

Room Tip: Our room was at the back which seemed better than our friend's which was in an alcove.

The house is situated at the South end in a clean and safe neighbourhood. I stayed at the 4th floor with shared facilities. The room faced the street but was quiet. The mattress was very comfortable and clean. Breakfast was a real treat.
Both Jan and Ben were excellent hosts and provided helpful advice on how to get around Boston. I would definitely stay there again if I do visit Boston in future.

The 1863 house is stylish and comfortable, and is a great value for the money. We had a room on the third floor with a shared bath. Jane and Ben are excellent, friendly hosts. The location is fantastic: in the hip South End neighborhood and less than a half-mile from the T station (orange line). We'll definitely visit again.
