Beautiful old building with a excellent modern interior.
Location was great for touring the city historic sites.
Staff was wonderful, very helpful with advice and recommendations.
Good restaurants are close by, tour buses stop in the same block, great view across the city from our room.

Excellent location, staff extremely friendly, modern and extremely spacious rooms. Have stayed at many hotels in Boston and The Ames is in my top 3. It had a very modern and contemporary feel and is ideally located for Boston's top sights.

Perfect location, 1 block from Faneuil hall (hill side for lunch- get there early & 26 North 4 breakfast). About 1 mile to river for jogs. Easy downtown Access. They are renovating bar & restaurant, when complete, I am certain it will be very very nice, like the rest of hotel. Lobby is small but staff is very accommodating. It's It is a downtown hotel which means early trucks, etc. Request a room not facing the street.

The room - spacious, very clean decor, modern, but comfortable. I had no problem with bedding and slept great. There is a glass wall separating shower from bedroom. Fun if your traveling with significant other, wouldn't take my family. There is a thick sheer you can pull though.

Would absolutely stay again & definitely better than a 3 1/2 star rating. Reasonably priced compared to others.

2 Down, 1 to go

I really wanted to like the Ames Boston Hotel. The location is great convenient to the T - Cambridge is just a 10 minute ride away - and the rest of downtown is within easy walking distance. But the problems with this hotel while not major, leave one with the distinct feeling that something is just "off" with the whole affair.

The Ames Boston Hotel (or ABH as the key cards use) has all the visible trappings of a modern upscale boutique hotel. The decor is best described as minimalist modern but comfortable. My room was a spacious corner suite with great views of the city, more than ample natural light, and details like a table that would easily seat four adults and comfortable couch. In short: amenities that would usually be reserved for a far more expensive space.

If I only had the architectural ascetics to go on, the ABH would be a 4 start hotel: great windows, good light, an original cast iron staircase ascends to most floors of the building. However, they just miss the details that actually make a hotel - well - a hotel. Door guys exist sporadically according a schedule unknown and unknowable to mortals. Upon checking in at the incredibly late hour of 5PM, the one person working the front desk transacted the checkin without so much as saying hello, or bothering to put his current phone conversation on hold, or even making eye contact. The restaurant and bar at the location are closed for no easily discernible reason. The generally absent and absent minded staff ghost about the place - leaving one feeling that ABH has more in common with the Overlook Hotel from "The Shining" than a standard modern upscale hotel.

Were it only to stop there, ABH could merely be a rough cut gem. But then one factors in the other issues: Internet/WiFi that has only two speeds -"unusable" or "frustrating"; "switches" around the room some that are connected to lights in a manner that turns shutting off all of the lights in a room into a video game like mix and match puzzle challenge. Around 5AM most mornings - the train runs close enough underneath the hotel that light sleepers could be woken. (At least I assume it was the trains, not sure what non seismic event could cause a vibration 8 floors up.)

Ultimately for the rate - ABH comes off more like a hotel trying to be the W but barely making it to A-Loft. Without the details taken care of, the value just isn't there.

Room Tip: I stayed in a corner room on a higher floor. It had *great* views of downtown.

We're sorry that you found some aspects of your stay unsatisfactory. As our Doormen also assist our guests with their luggage to & from the room, luggage storage, & retrieval, sometimes they will be absent from the front. However, we strive to have the door attended at all times by either our Valets or management - so there is no excuse that the door wasn't covered during the prime time of 5pm.

Our restaurant was closed by ownership back in May due to falling business levels. We are currently working with management to open a new concept there & to start serving a continental breakfast again.

We're glad you enjoyed your spacious, comfortable room & liked the view. We know you have other options when traveling to Boston, so we'd like to thank you for choosing Ames. We appreciate it!

1. The hotel bed is a hard futon. It uncomfortable and the bedding provided is only a hot down duvet. We had to request to have sheets and blankets 4 times.
2. The acoustics of the bathroom are really loud. If you are staying with anyone and would like to do anything private in the bathroom, prepared to be embarrassed. Also, one of the bathroom walls is a window with just a shear curtain covering, which again is not very private if you may be sharing the room.
3. There are no food & beverage options available in the hotel. Fortunately, there are many places to dine nearby.

Thank you for your stay and for your review. I'm so sorry about your experience. We do have rooms that offer bathrooms that do not have the sheer glass, but rather have frosted glass walls for privacy. I'm truly sorry about this. We are currently re-concepting the restaurant. I hope you'll give us another chance, and I urge you to reach out to me and I would be happy to assist you personally with your reservation.
