“Amazing Location. Great Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2013

Although we've been to Boston numerous times, we'd never seen the Ames Hotel. There's no signage and no identification. In fact, the biggest complaint we heard from guests is they had circled the block numerous times looking for it and passed it equally as many times. We did, too. Located in one of Boston's historic buildings, this boutique hotel can take bragging rights for having the best location in town. Convenient for walking the Freedom Trail and the sights. Minutes from Faneuil Hall, the North End, Boston Garden and the Harbor, it's also steps away from the T (with easy airport access). It's contemporary. It's sleek. It has David Bowie, the Stones and some alternative music piped into the elevator. Its restaurant was closed (under renovation/new management?) when we were there. Rooms are well equipped and in an effort to be slick are super minimalist. Would we stay there again? Absolutely. Would we keep our fingers crossed that we'd get another great Priceline rate? You bet.

We wanted to try a unique place to stay, so we chose the Ames Hotel, right near Faneuil Hall, designed into the first skyscraper ever built in Boston. The décor is thoroughly modern throughout, which we enjoyed; it is so different from our 100 year old home! Even the mini-bar was thoroughly modern. Mixed in amongst the requisite bottles of liquor and wine, candy bars, and other snacks, we found one package saying “Help, I have a headache!”, and another saying, “Help, I can’t sleep!” It got even more fun. One package was called “Tease”, and contained products we have never seen in a minibar before…contents I will leave to your imagination. There was another small package labeled “Cannibus”. Hmmmmm….turned out to be a candle with the description, “Intoxicating Aroma!”

After a lovely, lovely evening, we settled down to sleep in our luxurious hotel room, having decided not to light the cannibus candle, as intriguing as it was. Ahhhhhhh, peace and comfort…..except for the “minor” street noise. We were in siren alley. We were in jackhammer and construction noise tree house. The sounds reverberated through our hotel room. All. Night. Long. Apparently when they were designing this hotel, they left out sound proofing. No wonder they have a “Help! I can’t sleep!” package in the minibar! This morning, we opened one of the bedside table drawers, and found a package of ear plugs, along with a note stating that we might hear some construction noise. Would that we had looked in the drawer last night! After a somewhat drawn out discussion with the hotel manager, during which we were told that we “should expect street noise, you’re in a city” (Really?! I have stayed at a multitude of downtown hotels without having my room literally shake with noise), and “You should have called us, we would have changed your room” (Yup, at three in the morning, we are going to traipse around inside the hotel to a new room?), we were granted a small reduction in the price of our stay. Probably won’t be going back to the Ames Hotel…as much for the attitude and behavior of the staff as for the sleepless night.

Room Tip: Rooms are very modern, lovely, great walk in showers...however, make sure to ask for a room on the h...

What a great location! Extremely close to 2 subway stations, right in the financial district- quincy market, the commons, all within close walking distance. Couldn't of asked for a better location. As for the hotel, we stayed there for 4 nights, very modern and clean in the room. It's spacious and yes it is a bit noisy at night from the street noises, but not that bad if you are on a higher floor (we were on floor 11). We were dissapointed the hotel didn't have breakfast or any food/drinks at all. The restaurant/bar is closed for renovations or something. Parking with the hotel is very expensive. Valet is 42$/night- what a ripoff, but I guess normal for a city hotel? The staff is very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Housekeeping is great and did a fabulous job. Bed is very comfortable, fee wifi. The only thing I didn't like was in the shower- its a modern shower but half of the glass seems to be missing- you need some sort of door or curtain that separates the shower from the bathroom, because water just gets all inside the bathroom floor from the shower- strange. All in all, excellent hotel, excellent location! I got this hotel on a name your own price on Priceline, so I couldn't complain for just under 100$/night, it was a good deal.

Room Tip: Get a room on a higher floor (above floor 10)

Prior to our visit we received an email from Ames saying their F&B service was not operating, they provided a small refund (as breakfast was included in our prepaid rate), but it did not seem comparable to the amount breakfast would cost.

When we arrived, the decor and reception was nice. Our room was spacious, modern and clean, but very dark - especially in the bathroom. There was no complimentary water. And for the price we would have expected robes, slippers, amenity kits etc, but there was none of this. There was also no tea or coffee making facilities in the rooms, and with the restaurant closed this was annoying. Right next door to the hotel there is also a Homeless Shelter, which made it a little scary when coming home late at night or being out early in the morning. Location wise, it was close to Fanueli Hall which was handy to restaurants etc, however we were looking for somewhere for dinner at 9pm and couldnt find anywhere that was still serving!
Overall, our experience was ok, but if we went back to Boston we wouldnt stay at Ames again.

Room Tip: The higher up rooms are quieter

Very cool hotel right in the heart of Downtown Boston. Just a block from Fenuil Hall, the Financial District and hundreds of restaurants, bars and attractions. There is no better location in Boston. The valet is on top of things and had my luggage inside before I even made it out of the cab. Checkin was quick and staff were friendly. There are free bicycles for guests to ride around Boston. I only wish I had time to take them out around Boston. The hotel was very cool. Be sure to check out the "ghost chandeliers" in the mirrors outside of the elevators. Neat! The room was trendy and the view of downtown Boston was Facebook-worthy. All in all... a great stay!

I am just traveling back to NYC from my stay in Boston and at the Ames. I have stayed there before, but have ALWAYS preferred the Fairmont - which was booked. I am still fuming and wish I had read TripAdvisor before booking my room. The restaurant is closed completely. This means, no bar, no restaurant. AND - there used to be a great breakfast room, which was included. NO breakfast, no coffee and I swear, they don't care. I had told clients to meet me at the Woodward for drinks - which became a disaster as the stupid bar was closed. Before I left, I told the front desk employee that I was going to write in to TripAdvisor to say how angry I was - NO RESPONSE. Just an "ok." Even Chuck, the concierge who had helped me out before, was really at a loss. I will NEVER stay there again. I warn people against it. Please do yourself a favor and stay at the Fairmont.

Room Tip: Good room? Ha !

checked in and wanted to freshen up before going out..2:00...no hot water and water would not drain down. Called fron desk said it would be fixed. Got back to hotel 8::00 pm and still not fixed. Called front desk and a person was sent up to fix..next day left hotel at 9:00am and got back at bout 4:00pm and room service had not cleaned and made our beds. Called front desk sent someone up, but had to leave the room for an hour while they cleaned and made the beds. Got back to hotel and talked to night manager and was told that sometimes rooms are over looked..next morning at check out asked to talk to day manager and she would not come out to talk to us. Two days of this and I still had to pay almost $900. 00...never again

Room Tip: To chose a good room go to an other hotel.
