I had a wonderful birthday dinner at Gennaro's tonight, and the meal was outstanding from start to finish. The fried calamari was light and tender, served with both a marinara and a sweet chili sauce. The gnocchi bolognese and spaghetti carbonara were exactly as people had described - perfect. Best gnocchi I have ever had and the carbonara was superb - I don't think it could be done better. Melt in your mouth homemade pasta and a delicate, not overpowering or heavy, carbonara sauce. Only thing I would suggest is going a little lighter on the pancetta, but that may simply be personal preference. The wine list was lovely and the wines by the glass generous. The vanilla bread pudding was nicely done and served with a wonderful salted caramel sauce. Adding to the exquisite cuisine was a lovely, warm, elegant and quiet ambience, attentive but not stuffy or pushy waitstaff, a violinist, and a visit to most diners tables by Marisa, the executive chef who hails from Italy. If I had one suggestion for this North End gem, it would simply be a heartier, more crusty bread. One of the reviewers talked about warm, outstanding bread, so I was a little disappointed when the bread was just average. Certainly not a deal breaker, but a wonderful bread can set the tone for the meal to come. I will absolutely be back to Gennaros. The prices are higher than your average North End venue, but the quality of the food is worth the incremental difference.

This was quite simplyone of the most amazing meals I have ever eaten. Classic Italian at it's finest. The homemade ricotta really set the dishes apart from others. We could not have been more pleased with our entire experience. This is the best kept secret in Boston.....

If you go to Boston, you've got to go to Genero's. Fantastic Italian cuisine, in the hearth of the Italian district. The Seafood Stew is out of this world and the wine list, while short is quite OK.

We had not been here since the chef Marisa Iocco took over the kitchen. It's terrific innovative food (though plenty of classic dishes available) with good service and superb house red wine. And unusual for the North End, excellent deserts. Also a very charming little bar.

I met with Executive Chef Marissa, and the general manager to put together a luncheon party for 20 people in the next week. They took care of everything and as I was on a flight Marissa emailed me meal recommendations, wine pairing, and desert selections. I did not have to do anything but agree to her incredible creativity.
Marissa is a credit to her native Italy, where she honed her culinary expertise. I've lived in Boston for 50 years and been to Italy 25 times and Gennaro's is one of the few restaurant that understands the importance of fresh ingredients, mouth-watering creative meals, presentation, ambiance, and service; and all this at an affordable price.
The location is on the same block as Paul Revere's house and across from the birthplace of JFK's mother. They even serve brunch on weekends.
If you want an excellent Italian brunch, lunch, or dinner you need to experience Gennaro's 5 North Square in the North End, the best Italian restaurant in Boston.
