Completely fascinating to stand on the bridge in the center of a globe and look out at the continents and countries with their 1935 boundaries and names. I especially enjoyed looking at the geographical relationships of areas and following the equator and the tropics around the globe and seeing the location of the tropics in such a visual way.
Great fun and so pleased that I finally did this
While this was a bit smaller than I expected, it was still very impressive. Not only because you get to be INSIDE the globe, but also because you get to see the world as it was almost 100 years ago, and realize how much it's changed. The round shape of the room also makes for curious sound effects worth exploring. Only problem is that you must visit with a tour and can't stay inside for longer
We're glad you enjoyed your visit! To clarify one point, everyone IS welcome to stay longer than the length of the tour as long as we are open and there is space available. To ensure we never go over capacity and everyone has a chance to spend time in the Mapparium, we do ask that visitors exit at the end of each tour, but all are welcome to re-enter right away or any time later the same day, as long as there is space available. On most days, it would be possible to spend all day from 10:20-5:00 inside the Mapparium, simply re-entering every 20 minutes!
Words cannot express the the amazement you feel when you are inside this dome. The feeling is breath taking. The light show is unique and inspiring. Definitely want to go again to be able to spend more time. A true one of a kind experience. Also take a tour around the church and the courtyard which is beautiful and serene.
It is like a parallel universe with lots of magical and dreamlike images I won't see in my waking hours, except once I am inside. Totally worth the tour if only for the lamp room.
This attraction is SO cool. We've been multiple times over decades. 20 minutes at low cost make it easy to fit in between other activities. Super friendly staff. After a brief introduction you walk through the middle of a stained glass globe of the world as it appeared in 1935. Really fun acoustics make for a unique experience. A person at one end of the globe can here the whisper of their friend at the other end, and if you stand in the center you can hear yourself in surroundsound. The Mapparium is trademarked, so no pictures allowed inside, but you can take pictures in front of a background in the lobby. A quick burst of unique fun!
Definitely check out the unique perspective of walking inside the globe at the Mapparium. It's a short 10 minute tour of unique space and acoustics inside this glass globe map of the Earth. Glad we finally stopped by.
