Nice view of the river, crowded if there is an event (mostly summer like July 4). Not certain about after dark security, ask around in advance unless you are with a group. The same goes for all along the river - it’s by no means a high crime area, and there are usually lots of college students about, but use common sense as in any urban area.

A lovely riverside walk along the Charles River. On a nice sunny day, this part of Boston is well worth spending some time for a flat relaxing walk or cycle ride.

The path provides a nice leisurely walk along the river. Many people and activities going on. With the exception of road noise from the Sorrow, it is a great escape.

We walked along here on our way to Harvard. It’s a beautiful area with so much greenery. Definitely nice to do while in Boston.

Winding path along the river where you can take your mind off the city while still being surrounded by it. They way watching the water lowers your blood pressure. I don't know if that is a fact, but I always enjoy being by the water.

This stretches along the Boston side of the Charles River and comprises paths and green space with trees and views across the river to Cambridge. The paths are mixed use and bikes are supposed to give way ("yield" in the local parlance) to walkers but in practice this is patchy. Runners are in evidence too and the same applies with jogger dodging a sport in its own right. However, it is peaceful and tranquil and the river is wide and calm. When we were there we watched yachts racing on the river. Worth casual stroll.

great to walk along although you are sharing it with cyclists and runners. Shame it is so close to the road but even with that it is a nice area to walk. Plan your walk as there are sizable gaps between place you can enter and leave the esplanade if on foot.

Lovely place to spend either a sunny afternoon or late evening in watching the boats on the river or just people watching.

An absolute must do if you are in Boston for the 4th of July. We arrived an hour or so prior to sundown and found a great place on one side of a sidewalk for easy access in and out. It is extremely crowded but everyone was friendly and enjoying the celebration of America's freedom.

The Boston Pops are amazing. Playing the wonderful patriotic songs mixed with some new music for 3 hours (8pm - 11pm). The fireworks as you expect are AMAZING and huge. Nothing short of magnificent. The fireworks reflect off the water and make everything sparkle.

This is a kid friendly event as well as for teenagers, college students and adults of all ages. Be prepared to be patient when exiting and take your time. Ushering 200,000 people out takes some time and orchestration by traffic control. As long as you keep this in mind you should be fine.

Depending on where you are going you can always stop at CHEERS and have a cocktail prior to departing to your next location.
