“First Time in Boston”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

Booked in October for a May Graduation. There were limited to none for accommodations under $200 per night. Found The John Jeffries House on TripAdvisor. The basement twin bed room was clean, had a kitchenette and private bath. The beds were comfortable. Did not find it noisy as others have stated but was toward the back of the building. Staff were very courteous and pleasant, continental breakfast was pastries or rolls, tea coffee, fruit. Best thing was across the street from the Red Line T. This is a public transportation City. Never walked so much as in Boston. Lots to see and do. I would stay here again due to the value and location---You sleep, get up and shower, are out the door and return at night to sleep again.

A short walk across the skybridge over the expressway and you're on the Charles River Esplanade just steps from the Hatch Shell, the boat house, and a bistro that serves brunch and lunch, espresso, and jazz on Sundays. An easy walk to the Public Gardens and Commons down Charles Street, passing boutiques for clothing, paper, antiques and several fun restaurants and pubs. Across the street from the T, so easy access to the whole city. Our room had a separate bedroom and living room as well as a small kitchen, a comfortable accommodation for our five night stay. Housekeeping staff was very friendly. When the chain for pulling up the shade in our room broke, they had it fixed within an hour. Drawbacks: noise from the T, sirens from nearby Mass General and Beacon Hill Pub, limited cable channels in the room (though good selection on TV in downstairs common room) and when I asked for a softer pillow, there were none to be had.

Room Tip: We liked being on the 4th floor. Our room, 410, a corner suite, was less noisy than some because not...

It was a nice hotel for the price. The location is very good as long as you don't mind taking the T. If you are unlucky, could be noisy due to many ambulances heading to the big hospital located right in front of them.

This hotel was a great value. Incredibly close to the T station. Comfortable rooms, good restaurants near by. Very charming, rooms are not huge, but adequate. Great water pressure! I would definitely stay here again!

Stayed here for 4 days during my daughter's college graduation. Fantastic location, with the T, big CVS drugstore, and lots of restaurants close by. As it's directly on the Red Line subway, it's more convenient to Harvard or MIT than 'closer' options which are three or four times the price. Unlike others, John Jeffries' rate doesn't triple during graduation season. The outside gardens are pretty, service was generally good, maids were great, room clean and comfortable (we had a kitchenette which was handy) and nice complimentary fruit and coffee available in the lounge. Elevator access available if you have trouble with the entry stairs which are a steep 1/2 flight. There is a lovely walk along the Charles River just outside the hotel doors. Only suggestion is that the 'light breakfast' was only suitable for sugar addicts-- (maybe that's what they mean by 'American'?) very stale and very sweet donuts being the only option. Some cold cereal or even a bagel or toast would be far better.

I called at the last minute to secure a room in the midst of a snowstorm - which prevented my further progress home to NH. A fellow traveler from Boston suggested this lovely inn and was kind enough to see me to the door from Logan Airport. The Inn is just across the street from the Mass General Hospital T stop (Red LIne), so very convenient to anyone traveling by T.

The room was cozy & comfortable with a microwave, stovetop, refrigerator and private bath. WiFi was included as was a light continental breakfast with good coffee. Charles Street offers many restaurant options. The only downside was the occasional siren, but that is inevitable in a city. I slept like a baby. The staff was accommodating and available 24 hours if needed. Great price, especially for the location. This is one of the best deals for accommodations in Boston.

One tip: if you are coming from Logan airport, take the bus labeled Silver Line T to South Station (free) for a quick transfer to the red line where you will exit at MGH/Charles Street. Cross the street and you are there.

We stayed here as a group in Sept. 2022 and loved it. It is an historic house, formerly a nurses' home for the Massachusetts Infirmary, close by. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It was sympathetically renovated in 1986 and what an excellent job they made of the renovation- it is utterly charming. The public rooms are reminiscent of an English stately home in style- lovely reproduction furniture and upholstery make it a delightful experience for lovers of history or anyone else who is tired of modern corporate brand hotels, to stay here. Bedrooms have all mod cons, tho' and the kitchenettes included in most rooms are a boon for people who want a change from eating out or want to save their money to spend on the many other attractions Boston has to over. There are also take-aways nearby. Staff were most helpful and friendly and the location just great, close by the historic area of Beacon Hill, but an easy walk to other Boston attractions and very near shops, the "T" subway station .and many good restaurants and cafés . Breakfast very different but tasty, especially if you have a sweet tooth- lots of lovely cakes and muffins. Tea and coffee available all day. They will order lunch and dinner for you to eat in your room, from the nearby Panifico restaurant, too. All in all a great experience I just wish I had realised that there was a garden! I will definitely stay there again if I am lucky enough to return to Boston!
