“Boutique hotel charm in the heart of Boston”
Reviewed April 21, 2014

If you prefer old school charm and service, and good value, to bland chain hotel amenities, then we highly recommend the Eliot Hotel. We booked the hotel as a treat in the midst of a week-long tour of New England colleges, and are glad that we did. Our room was attractive, comfortable and quiet (great linens, etc.), everyone on the staff was friendly and prompt, and the hotel was ideally located - close to Newberry Street shopping and restaurants, the Boston Marathon finish line, the convention center and the T, and just a short walk from Boston University, the Public Garden, and other sights. We were able to turn our car over to the valet when we arrived and not worry about it for days. The hotel has free guest privileges with a Boston Sports Club around the corner, and there were scenic running routes nearby. And the delicious fresh cookies upon arrival sealed the deal for the hungry teen in our party. Our only regret is that we did not have the opportunity to dine at one of two the well-regarded restaurants in the hotel. Will definitely return to the Eliot, and stay longer, when we are next in Boston.

I stayed here for a week in April 2014 while on a business trip, which I extended a couple of days for pleasure. The hotel is located in a nice part of town, just a stone's throw from the MIT campus in Cambridge (across the bridge) and within a short walk to Boylston Street where there are a lot of restaurants/cafes etc.

Check in was quick and I was in my room within 5 minutes of arriving. The rooms are extremely spacious (all suites) and for the price paid, it was a steal. It consisted of a small room with the mini bar/coffee maker, then a small office desk/living room and then the bedroom. Room was clean and well provided for (with a in-room safe, ironing board, 2 luggage stands -which was a nice touch from the usual one, and sufficient power points for all my various gadgets).

Over the course of the week I did observe some things that could be improved:
1. Bed was too soft for my liking, and didn't provide good lumbar support.
2. The shower cubicle was very short and slightly on the narrow side, and didn't have a door. As a result, I had to stand almost against the wall, else water would splash out onto the floor of the bathroom.
3. The front reception staff rotated a bit, and some of them could do well to smile a little bit more :)
4. The street it was on is very busy, especially in the evening. It was difficult to even pull over at the front for the valet service.
5. No complimentary bottled water in the room - I had to walk daily to the bottle shop down the street to buy some

That said, these were all rather minor points. It was a great hotel in a great location and I would definitely stay there again.

We recently spent two nights at the Eliot on our first visit to Boston. The Back Bay location is very convenient to many of the amenities of this wonderful city. Located on Commonwealth Avenue, it is an easy walk to dining and shopping and being on the same street as some of the most amazing residential architecture in the city makes it feel like you're transported back in time. We had booked a standard room and upon our arrival I requested a room at the front of the hotel as the side was covered in scaffolding (since removed). Daniella at the front desk was so lovely and took things one step further and upgraded us to a suite overlooking Commonwealth Ave. Luxurious is a word that I don't toss around lightly, but I think it's appropriate in this case. The suite was so spacious and well appointed that we had a hard time leaving it to go explore the city! Very comfortable bed with fresh crisp linens, a huge sitting room, a separate foyer and refreshment bar stocked with a coffee maker and plenty of coffee/creamers/sugars/etc. Even though we had windows facing both Commonwealth and Massachusetts Avenues, the suite was very quiet and we didn't hear any traffic noise at all. We will definitely be back to stay at this property!

Room Tip: The scaffolding that was blocking the views on Massachusetts Avenue has been removed as of April 10...

Everyone we encountered was friendly and welcoming, from the doorman to the housekeeping people. We got a yummy delivery of home-baked cookies, which was a perfect afternoon treat after taking an overnight flight.
We arrived at 8am and our room wasn't ready (we didn't expect it to be at that hour) but they rushed to get a room ready for us and called us around noon to let us know it was ready.
Wonderful service.
And it was close to Boston University and very close to fun shopping, galleries and restaurants.

The Eliot is a lovely old hotel with all the modern amenities, in the central area of Boston, with a well deserved reputation for service and customer satisfaction. We were made very welcome on arrival and the valet parking is a great boon in a busy city centre hotel. The reception manager who greeted us - Soyoon Joo - was so welcoming and helpful and her courtesy and professionalism made our stay at the Eliot even more enjoyable. Overall we found the hotel location very handy for walking to and from the various city centre sights, including the shops at the main shopping Mall. Boston is a busy place, despite the icy Winter weather, and the hotel was a lovely refuge on our return each evening.

Room Tip: There is major refurbishment of the hotel exterior so if possible choose a room away from that.

Upon our arrival, the staff was extremely helpful and attentive. The hotel itself has an old-world charm and feels as it is in a world of the 1920's. Unfortunately the hotel was very run down and dirty in the actual room. It turned out to be a further walk from downtown and tourist sites than we had imagined-but that was our own fault not knowing the layout of the city. The staff during the day was wonderful but at night, absolutely rude. It was very obvious why management schedules them the way they do. I would recommend this hotel for those who only wish to stay in the Back Bay area and are looking for the historical pizazz rather than convenience and efficiency.

Joseph P, Assistant General Manager at Eliot Hotel, responded to this review, April 16, 2014
I wish to thank this guest for taking the time to share their experience of our hotel. While we are committed to providing superlative accommodations and service, it appears we were unsuccessful in this case. It is perplexing, however, that the guest would state the room was run down and dirty as the entire hotel has been completely renovated and our housekeeping standards are of the highest order. Had the guest informed the hotel of their dissatisfaction, we could have investigated and certainly attempted to provide the guest with an accommodation that would have met their expectations; it seems we were not given the opportunity to do so. It is regrettable as well that this guest expressed such a discordant experience between our daytime and evening staff. We pride ourselves in providing gracious and professional service to all of our guests in the most egalitarian manner. That the guest feels differently leaves us some concern and I would certainly welcome an opportunity to discuss the experience personally with the guest.
