We went there without any reservation and we were suprised that they have one 3 beds room free! Room clean and big. Bathrooms big but a bit old. We had to leave hostel at 7 so we couldn't eat breakfast (start at 9.00). I couldn's fall asleep but I guess the reason was first night in states (excitation :D ). Prices affordable. I recommend it.

The rude reception staff stuffed our booking and "upgraded" us to a "deluxe family suite" which consisted of a double and two singles squished in a room with a heater that was too hot and unable to be turned down. There were pubic hairs in the bathtub and there wasn't even a toilet roll holder. Because they stuffed our room that meant we had to check out after one night and then recheck in the next afternoon which considering we booked this room about two months ago was not acceptable. The location o this place is the only thing it has going for it.

40 Berkeley is the best you could get for your money. Rooms and bathrooms are clean, and the staff is friendly and helpful. However, there are two shortcomings: It was not possible to establish an internet connection through the WiFis, although there are two of them on each floor. I had to go to the lobby every day to go online. The second disadvantage is that the whole building is overheated in the winter so I had to open the window during the night (adjustment in my room did not help), which is not only a waste of energy, but also very noisy if you have a room on the side of the street.

But overall, I can recommend this hostel - it is hard to find a better one for this price.
