The front staff were all extremely helpful and being open around the clock was great for us as we checked out very early in the morning. The private room was the perfect size for us (a couple) and the bed was great. Showers and bathrooms of a good standard. The breakfast was very generous - we were there on the weekend so we got hot options, eg. eggs, bacon, sausages, hashbrowns, etc - but the continental options were also plentiful. Back Bay is a very lovely area, nice and quiet but only a 10 minute walk to areas like Boylston St for eating and shopping. And the subway station was very close by too. Free wifi, billiards, popcorn, microwave access and coffee were all a bonus!

The people running this place are fantastic and the people who stay here represeent the real world. Humble yourself and stay; you will feel good about yourself.
The prices are great for this area of Boston..

I was in town on person business and highly recommend if sharing a bathroom isn't a problem.

Eddie

Room Tip: Top floors the best, nice and quiet.

The residence had a very friendly atmosphere with occupants of all ages and walks of life. The reception staff were freindly and helpful.
The rooms were spacious and coveniently furnished for all needs. The restrooms and showers were to a good hygien standard.
The breakfast provided met all taste and needs. Plenty of variety of fruit juice and coffee. The lifts were spacious and available at all times.
The hall had billiard table and free coffee all day.

Room Tip: Get a room close to the shower and restroom (toilet)area.

I had a very good experience staying at 40 Berkeley. My room was clean and the shared bathroom was kept clean and tidy. The rooms are nothing fancy, but it was exactly as it was portrayed on their website, and a bed and desk was all I really needed. The breakfast was absolutely fine. Again, nothing fancy, but there were plenty of options. The staff on reception were always helpful if you had questions. The female residents were also friendly if you took the time to say hello to them. The hostel is in an excellent location; a short walk to the metro station. There are also convenience stores nearby. I am a young female and I was travelling on my own and I felt safe in the hostel and its general area. If the choice is to pay $150-$200 AUD a night to stay in a hotel in a comparable location (possibly without breakfast), then I'd easily choose to stay at 40 Berkeley again. It was great value for money.

We were in town for the TEDxBeaconStreet event and had the pleasure of staying at 40 Berkeley. The staff was very friendly, helped us find the great spots to eat and visit in the neighborhood and Boston, in general. I had a two bedroom room with attached bathroom and it was clean, comfortable, and had a sizable dorm-style fridge. The breakfast is better than most low-budget hotels and the location is very convenient (near the subway station and a nice area of the city).

Our recent stay (as mother and daughter) was ok. The hostel is a great location, great common areas but our room (329?) was terrible compared to other hostels and for over $100 per night, should be much better. 2 pretty shabby single beds, no bedlights, nowhere to put things next to the bed, very old furniture (a desk). The common area bathrooms on the 3rd floor were relatively ok, i went to the 2nd floor common bathroom at one stage and it was way better. In comparison to other hostels, our room was below average for the price. The breakfast and the common area was great. It was a bit disappointing you cant help yourself to tea/coffee after 5pm as the area was always clean and not abused. No common kitchen or anywhere to store perishables either so if you want to self-cater this is not the place for you. The front desk staff had 'interesting' knowledge of local events etc. No stairs next to the lift which is interesting when the lift is so slow (only emergency stairs at the end of the corridor)

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room when booking. They might be better.

This place is creepy: looks like an old hospital. The rooms are tiny and I would not describe it as clean. My room did not have curtains; instead there were some old blinds ready to fall apart, with huge holes --so when the sun rises it is directly in your eyes. On top of that only one out of the three showers was working. This place also offers breakfast which is ok.

I would definitely not recommend it. At the same price you can get a hotel or b&b room with your own bathroom.
