Go on a sunny day, its dark in there. Courtyard lovely, tons of stuff of all kinds...a huge personal collection - and right near the MFA so you can use MFA parking

We went to the Gardner Museum with a member and avid devotee. We weren't prepared for the extensive, eclectic, collection and the over-stimulation of just about every room, each crammed from floor to ceiling with Gardner's voluminous collection. Go and do one room at a time. Or, do more homework than we did (which was zero) so you either know what to expect or can plan your visit. Golfers will understand the metaphor - control the museum, don't let the museum control you.

An excellent eclectic collection of art, textiles...go see for yourself it's just down the street of the Boston Museum of Fine Art, I recommend the audio tour.

The courtyard is the undisputed highlight of this museum, an amazing oasis of tranquility. The museum itself is stuffed with mainly European art and artefacts. Very interesting and certainly eclectic. The gift shop is definitely worth a look and the restaurant/cafe is a lovely addition with an interesting menu and light, modern decor. As well as free entrance if you are called Isabella, you can also get in free on your birthday - with proof!
