Designed by New York's prominent architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White, this stately library is situated in Back Bay on Copely Square. In 1888, Charles Follen McKim was inspired by the Italian Renaissance-style of the Bibliotheque Ste-Genevieve in Paris for Boston's grand library, which opened in 1895. An inner courtyard with arcade, statues and fountain provides a lovely place to linger. A massive grand marble staircase flanked by a pair of stone lions carved by Louis St. Gaudens, serves as a memorial to the 2nd and 20th Massachusetts Civil War Regiments. Marble walls, detailed coffered ceilings, murals and paintings adorn this exquisite work of art. Admission is free; this is a must for architectural buffs. Such an impressive building, you will leave inspired.
