Owner description: The red line on the sidewalk leads you on this 2.5-mile, self-guided tour of American Revolution sites. It starts at the Boston Common, America's oldest public park, and ends at the famed Bunker Hill Monument.

We did not have a lot of time to spend in Boston, just a little more than a handful of hours, and we opted for a self guided tour along the north portion of the Freedom Trail. It was easy, and informative, and our children had a great time following the red line. It was also fun to walk through some of the Boston neighborhoods that I know we would have otherwise missed. A big must visit is the colonial printer (mentioned in several other reviews) located next to North Church. Our printer was a young woman, and she was fabulous. She was very well informed and very enthusiastic. They also provided a really great demonstration of chocolate... we're taking some home with us.

We did not finish the Freedom Trail walking tour. We did some on our own, and some as a touring group from the Boston Common(highly recommended). It is a great way to see the city. The Trail is really a set of markers, so your tour will be self-guided unless you sign up for a tour. Also, some stops require paying admission to visit.

The Freedom Trail brings you to most of the must see places in Boston and is an easy walk around the city. We didn't bother paying for the tour or guide - iPad does the same thing!

Start at the visitors center actually in the park, not the Tourist Information store on the street. That's a tourist rip-off place--not the official visitors center. Walk out the door of the visitor's center and step on the red line and follow it to everything touristy there is to see in Boston. The school groups jam things up at some places but they drop away after the old North Church. Buy the $3 map at the visitors center so you'll have a description of what you're seeing. There's an entrance fee at just about every site. Never got lost, never felt unsafe. It's a "must do"!

This walk marked by a broad red line along its length takes longer than you think to complete because of the interesting points to see en route so allow a good day to do it, it will be worth it, afraid we did not have the energy for the 294 steps at the Bunker Hill memorial!
