We were not entirely sure if we wanted to Do a tour. Heard some great reviews re tours/guides but decided to do our own thing as timing didn't work for us.

It's super easy to navigate yourself around. Literally follow the "red path" that directs you to the sites. There are plenty of signs & easy to find. Most sites have information regarding their history & importance.

Make sure you bring your walking shoes as you cover a lot of territory. It was pretty cold & some of the paths were a bit uneven to walk on & slightly slippery from the ice.

A great activity as you don't have to spend any money. There are plenty of museums along the way so you can pick & choose what suits your interest. It obviously quite history heavy but even if that's not your thing, the buildings/parks/environment are stunning.

Lots of photo opportunities! We started around 10am & was finished by 3pm. This included a coffee break, stroll around the shops & Quincy market!

The tours seem extremely informative. However, not for everyone. I enjoyed spending longer time at particular places & we were on a tight schedule it worked out quite well.

For the history of the Revolutionary war and Colonial Boston walking tour is a must. It is easy to follow, and covers the important events in early US history. Plenty of places to stop for coffee, snack, a meal.

As you walk along the Freedom Trail (marked with a red line along the sidewalk), you pass many historically significant buildings and sites. I would strongly recommend making a stop to the information center in order to get a map, otherwise the trail can be a bit confusing.
