Owner description: The largest of the Boston Harbor Islands is a great spot for hiking and exploring.

The island provides great vistas and an interesting educational experience. One challenge is getting to and from the island. The ferry is efficient but can be a bit crowded on weekends, making scheduling a tad less flexible. As is par for the course, the cost for parking downtown can get expensive. I would encourage mass transit, but check for delays and construction delays, especially on weekends.

...that should be for longer than most people can spend. Explanation: The ferry service's last return is about 5 PM -- in the summer! If you have your own boat, no problem. (No one can sleep over.)

Anyway, it's big enough to take hours to explore, and historic enough to be worth researching a little bit before going, to give it that "third dimension". There's a fort that has had multiple uses over the last two centuries, including a prison, and actually acquired a ghost. There's a museum that authentically, professionally represents what life was like for various types of occupants over the years. There's fishing (BYO tackle). There's a walk-up food place operated by a Boston seafood restaurant company with food that's a cut above normal such fare. And there are events such as period plays and concerts.

Perhaps best of all, to this reviewer, it can be one of the only fresh locations in the Boston area on a hot, humid mid-summer day.

The boat trip out here takes around 30 minutes and there are beautiful views. There's also a nice breeze that we welcomed. There's a small visitor's centre on the island and we watched the short but informative movie before touring around the fort. There are interesting and dark rooms to wander around and from the top of the fort there are spectacular views. We only stopped by here for an hour before going over to Spectacle Island. It was long enough to see the fort but I wouldn't have minded having a little longer and there are several nice spots to have a picnic.

You start with a very pleasant boat trip; it really is an island, no bridges, then a well preserved and fascinating fort with a great deal of history, a civil war prison, for one thing. It is huge and has spectacular views and if you have children that are more interested in running than in history there's lots of grass and nooks and crannies to run around and hide in.

Young and older kids like this place, a lot of places to roam, the boat ride is a nice and scenic trip, a great thing to do on a nice day.
