The Omni Grove Park Inn
Ranked #13 of 66 Hotels in Asheville
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 15, 2013

We just left a three day visit to the Grove Park Inn (GPI), during which the inn celebrated its 100th birthday with fireworks; but, also, was taken over by the Omni Hotel chain on the first of July. It is clear that the GPI needs upgrades but it doesn't need increased prices and airline-like nickel and diming for every addition to the services.
Our room was on a low floor and the new carpet had the odor of a barn - we thought we were at the county fair. In addition, the walls were paper thin and the guests on either side of us came with babies/young children whose loud talk and running around the room might as well happened in our own room even late in the evening. Why can't hotels, including this luxury resort give their senior patrons rooms away from noisy children or even teenagers???
The food, however, was superb at all the restaurants. The golf course is a great course but is suffering seriously from much to much recent rain - washouts of a bridge or two and collapse of creek edges. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The ambiance is about the same as in the past with some changes in the main hall/entry/registration.
I trust that Omni even though they have already added additional charges, such as parking, will not fall to the same trap of the Cloisters in coastal Georgia. That is, out price themselves to their real customers rather than hoped for imaginary millionaires.

Room Tip: Make sure there is not new carpeting on your room floor with some unpleasant odors!

We spent two nights july12-14 2013. While the views and the 100 year anniversary fireworks were spectacular, the rest of the experience was very poor. Our room which was located in the Vanderbilt wing was at least 150 yards from the lobby and down a dark set of elevators that never worked properly. Walls were scratched and carpets were stained and opened on random floors. Once we got to the room, keys took many swipes to work and a replacement key did not work at all. The room was small and needed updating. Air conditioner was noisy and did not work well, sheets were old and pilled and pillows were very uncomfortable. The service was mixed, staff was rude especially at lobby coffee bar and few were helpful. The most amazing part is the location of the outdoor pool in relation to the room. We were told to take an elevator (which never worked properly) to the parking garage where we walked through a dark creepy garage full of old stored furniture with no signs directing us to the pool. Once you exited the garage, you had to walk at least a quarter mile to the pool in the busy street because there was no sidewalk. We were overcharged for our quoted golf rate, and paid an outdoor tennis court fee on top of already $25 per day resort activity fee. Overall it is way overpriced for what you get. Two stars at most.

I did a scathing review of the GPI last year. My birthday trip in 2012 was an absolute disaster. Since my wife and I have loved the GPI and even got married there, we thought giving the venue another chance was in order. We decided that visiting during the 100th birthday weekend of the hotel might be fun. It turned out to be a fabulous trip. The old hotel is showing the impact of a multi-million dollar update. But, more importantly, we have never found a nicer, more attentive staff at any resort. With the new Omni management, we hope the current atmosphere and enthusiasm continues. We couldn't be happier with our return visit. For us, you can visit nice resorts anywhere in the country.................... but, there is only one Grove Park Inn. Glad to see the commitment to service return. Will be back for my Bombay Sapphire martini in front of a roaring fire in a few months....................................................................ag

Great location and the main hotel takes you back in time. Great golf course and spa plus plenty more to do. The food and service are very good. Make sure to ask about parking because you can get a long way from your room to car. Valet if you can.

I like the Grove Park Inn. Been there maybe a dozen times? Usually for a two night stay for a business meeting. I like the rustic lodge and usually ask for mountain view in the old lodge. The help and friendliness from the staff are always fine.

I don't go there to be entertained - I go to enjoy the rustic feel and history of the place. I enjoy the bar in the main lobby and having a coffee in the morning out back enjoying the view and company of wife/friends. Asheville is a great place to visit otherwise with things to see and places to eat.

There are other places that are cheaper or have fancier facilities or are newer, etc. If you've been there and enjoy it - then you'll continue to do so. My wife likes the spa - I've not been. I am not a golfer so I can't comment.

Will look forward to next trip back.

Room Tip: I like the mountain view rooms from the main lodge. My bed slept incredibly well.

This is a huge hotel in a beautiful location, that could be a wonderful property. Sadly, it is not. The hotel is currently undergoing extensive renovations, which may ultimately be a good thing, however, at the moment it is a total mess. There are signs of consturction and workers everywhere. We were initially given a room in the Sammon Wing and instructed to walk down a corridor in search of elevators. The walk is incredibly long, construction everywhere, no semblance of order or decor, finally to locate a dark hall with elevators. The lobby level is near the top of the property, so we desended several floors to our room. Arrived in an even darker, barely lit hallway that smelled like mildew. Located our room, with some difficulty, as it was so dark. Noticed a large fan blowing at end of hall, perhaps to dry out what ever was causing the mildew smell. Attempted to unlock our door several times, finally calling the front desk on our cell phone, as the thought of the return trip to the front desk was exhausting. We were told that the keys are often difficult, and insturcted to swipe them VERY slowly, which worked ( would have been handy to know this from the beginning). Once in the room, we were literally shocked. This room was a dead ringer for any 2 star chain hotel along the highway. Exact same layout. No closet, just an opening in the wall. Tiny, old bathroom. Chipped, scratched furniture. Stains on the bathroom ceiling. After looking around for a couple of minutes, we gathered our things and repeated the long walk back to the front desk. We were then moved to a room in the original part of the hotel ( not the newly renovated rooms in the Vanderbilt wing). This room required a trip in a very old elevator that is operated by an attendant. So we had to wait awhile to summon the elevator. Although, nothing great, the second room was much better than the first. It had a bit of a craftsman character to it, with a much larger bathroom. The bedding is old, the sheets are pilled and of lower quality. The pillows appear to be very old and mushy. The bathroom linens are better than the bed linens, but nothing great. I could go on and on about the abondoned furniture you see randomly around the hotel, the leaks everywhere, the chips and scratches, etc etc. The bottom line is that if you are expecting any kind of a luxury stay, this place will dissapoint.

Room Tip: If you do decide to stay, ask for a room in the Vanderbilt room, athough I did not see them, they wo...

Thank you for staying with us and providing feedback so that we can continue to improve. We are sorry for not providing the level of luxury you were searching for. We are towards the completion of a $25 million renovation that was necessary to preserve the historic property but also update our accommodations and amenities. We hope you can rejoin us once we are complete and see all of the wonderful things we have to offer.

We spent one night at the Grove Park Inn. We stayed in the historic part of the hotel. The room was clean and renovated. The bed was extremely comfortable. Without exception, we found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast was delicious and bountiful. We really enjoyed the history tour provided by the hotel. My only disappointment was that I could not get an appointment at the spa.

Room Tip: We loved staying in the old section of the hotel. The view from the mountain side rooms is spectacul...
