My wife and I decided to go to Asheville for a one night get away. Fortunate to have picked the White Gate. The Inn itself was awesome, the room great, and the hospitality over the top. Add the close proximity to downtown ,great breakfast and graciousness of the host's and you have a no-miss retreat.FUN. We will go back.

My wife and I spent three nights in three rooms. We chose the B&B after seeing it was rated as one of the top ten most romantic B&Bs in the world, so thought it would be worth splurging a bit when we were visiting Asheville for a friend’s wedding, and were even willing to change rooms twice (we booked quite late). Because we got to stay in three rooms (Robert Frost, Dorothy Parker, Carl Sandburg), we can speak to the experience and comparison of different rooms, and have taken the time to provide a realistic, detailed and constructive review

Overall we liked the place: it is a unique, friendly and beautiful B&B. At the same time, we left wondering if we would be willing to pay so much again ($250 - $300 per night).

On the plus side, the décor of the Inn is beautiful: an ornate style and nice touches like the grand piano, and even cherry available for guests to sip on. Most impressive is the garden which is fantastic – we visited at exactly the right time for Fall colors and the trees were stunning in their bright colored leaves. Also the staff were great: friendly and helpful (we interacted most with Kyle and Root).

We would love to give 4 or 5 stars, but struggle to give more than 3. In general, much of the Inn feels tired and in need of an upgrade, and over-priced for the level of quality provided. The owners have done such a great job of winning awards and gaining publicity that it seems they can charge these prices, but I would think that to continue gaining such accolades, they will need to upgrade some aspects of the services.

Here are specifics on the BED and BREAKFAST aspects of our B&B experience:

BED
i) Two general comments on the bedrooms. First, while the sheets are REALLY nice, we found the pillows very uncomfortable, and while the top sheets were beautiful, they were super prickly and uncomfortable. Second, the TVs really need upgraded to modern and decent sized. The sets they have seem like they are ten years old (tiny and awful quality) - we expected more from such an expensive place (likewise, each room has a dated CD player radio).

ii) Carl Sandburg Suite: we loved this suite, especially the side room which gets lovely afternoon light and the leather sofa is perfect for an afternoon nap. We recommend this if you are willing to splurge on a suite.

iii) Robert Frost: while the four poster bed is impressive, we found it uncomfortable and really squeaky to the point that we didn't sleep well in this room (when Frankie told us the next morning that alot of babies are conceived at the Inn, it made us even more uncomfortable with the squeaky bed). The bathroom was lacking in this room, especially the shower and bath tub which are in need of an upgrade / replacement. All the cracks in the bath tub made it seem dirty to the point we didn't really want to get in it for a bath or a shower. Finally, the dated TV in this room is especially terrible - it is so small and far away that you can hardly even see the thing (in other rooms the small TV is at least close to the bed).

BREAKFAST
i) Food quality: The food served at breakfast was disappointing. We had read such good things about the food and that the Inn is a 4 diamond property that our expectations were high. However, we found the food tired and lacking taste. The coffee in particular was bland and tasteless (I ended up drinking the coffee from the Kerig machine because it had more flavor) and the juices seemed to be standard Minute Maid (with the price tag, freshly squeezed juice is a fair expectation). The “entrée” served each morning was much more like a heavy desert for us (e.g. pecan bread pudding one morning, honey baked oats another) – I was hoping for a real entrée like a standard bacon, sausage and eggs, or something more interesting like you find in the made epic cafes dotted around Asheville. I would recommend the owners and chef to check out the kinds of things on offer for breakfast at other places in town (e.g. Table) and learn from the competition which is frankly way ahead!

ii) Format: although this is clearly stated in the confirmation email (our bad) we were surprised at the format of breakfast. There is a strict 9am policy for start time (not good if you were expecting to have a lazy lie in on your weekend getaway), and it is kind of a communal experience where everyone is packed in to a relatively small dining room (not ideal if you are looking for romance even over breakfast), to the point you feel like you are away at a community retreat center. Most people sit around a large dining table. Finally, while Frankie’s loud running commentary and story telling can be entertaining, it may not be for everyone. Just a heads up: if you are looking for quiet relaxing breakfasts, this may not be the place for you.
All in all, we really did like Whitegate and it deserves much of the praise it has received. While we don’t know if it really met our expectations of the quality it has a reputation for, we could definitely increase to a 4 stars were some of the suggestions described above addressed.

Room Tip: As per our review, we recommend the Carl Sandburg Suite, and recommend avoiding the Robert Frost roo...

This was our second stay and the WhiteGate and we can't wait for our third! The Inn is gorgeous and the service top-notch. We stayed in a very roomy, beautiful suite this time. Frank and Ralph are the best. The three course breakfast is absolutly delicious and a great way to start the day. A glass of wine in the garden with the other guests in the late afternoon kicks off the evening. The Inn is a short walk to downtown Asheville shopping and restaurants.

My wife and I just returned from a 7 night stay at this wonderful B & B on our honeymoon. I have stayed at many B & B's both in this country and abroad and I have to say that this was one of the best I have ever stayed in. We booked the Walt Whitman room and were very pleased with it. The room was spotless and and the king size bed very comfortable. The 3 course breakfast's were different every day and every one was a treat. Our host's Frank and Ralph and the other staff were all great and went out of their way to do everything possible to make our stay a honeymoon we will never forget. Frank made breakfast an event to look forward to with advice on where to go and what to do and amusing stories. Ralph took time to answer some questions I had about the fantastic garden. I could go on and on writing about our stay but to make this short I highly recommend this B & B to anyone going to Asheville. We will be back for sure.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the Walt Whitman Room with it's private entrance, fireplace facing the bedroom and ba...

My husband and I just spent 3 days at the WhiteGate Inn. It was truly an exceptional experience. We arrived well before check-in and rang the bell. We immediately were greater by Frank. He greeted us warmly, invited us in, gave us a tour of inn, and checked us in.
We found the Dorothy Parker Room to meet all our needs. The 3 course breakfasts were absolutely delicious. But what made this B&B a 4 star standout was Frank & his staff.
Frank was warm, energetic, and entertaining. He's a "diamond in the rough"! We would stay here again, and would recommend this inn to all our friends.

From the welcoming champagne to the breakfast "dessert", White Cottage had many extra touches that we had not expected. You could make a meal of the social hour offerings in the lovely garden. Our gas fireplace in the Robert Frost room was not the glassed-in memory box of most inns, but a lovely roaring blaze. When the knock came indicating morning coffee was at our door, we knew this was a special place. The entire Inn, including our room, was impeccably decorated with real period pieces and beautiful fabrics. We walked everywhere and loved it. We'll definitely be back!
