My wife and I just returned from a 7 night stay at this wonderful B & B on our honeymoon. I have stayed at many B & B's both in this country and abroad and I have to say that this was one of the best I have ever stayed in. We booked the Walt Whitman room and were very pleased with it. The room was spotless and and the king size bed very comfortable. The 3 course breakfast's were different every day and every one was a treat. Our host's Frank and Ralph and the other staff were all great and went out of their way to do everything possible to make our stay a honeymoon we will never forget. Frank made breakfast an event to look forward to with advice on where to go and what to do and amusing stories. Ralph took time to answer some questions I had about the fantastic garden. I could go on and on writing about our stay but to make this short I highly recommend this B & B to anyone going to Asheville. We will be back for sure.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the Walt Whitman Room with it's private entrance, fireplace facing the bedroom and ba...

My husband and I just spent 3 days at the WhiteGate Inn. It was truly an exceptional experience. We arrived well before check-in and rang the bell. We immediately were greater by Frank. He greeted us warmly, invited us in, gave us a tour of inn, and checked us in.
We found the Dorothy Parker Room to meet all our needs. The 3 course breakfasts were absolutely delicious. But what made this B&B a 4 star standout was Frank & his staff.
Frank was warm, energetic, and entertaining. He's a "diamond in the rough"! We would stay here again, and would recommend this inn to all our friends.

From the welcoming champagne to the breakfast "dessert", White Cottage had many extra touches that we had not expected. You could make a meal of the social hour offerings in the lovely garden. Our gas fireplace in the Robert Frost room was not the glassed-in memory box of most inns, but a lovely roaring blaze. When the knock came indicating morning coffee was at our door, we knew this was a special place. The entire Inn, including our room, was impeccably decorated with real period pieces and beautiful fabrics. We walked everywhere and loved it. We'll definitely be back!

We were going to be in Asheville in the spring but had to cancel at the last minute due to a family crisis, the cancellation policy is a couple of weeks out and we missed that cutoff. We were charged for 2 night but was given a gift certificate for the full amount to use later.

We were very impressed with the facilities, location walking distance to down town, wonderful breakfasts, great coffee. He had originally indicated we were following a restricted diet - each breakfast was altered to meet our needs - even after we had told them not to worry.

The hosts are wonderful people - Kyle must have been a standup comedian, he kept the whole group (about 20) people entertained over breakfast, answered questions, gave suggestions.

Room Tip: the carriage house rooms seem to be larger than the rest

We decided to stay at a nicer place on this business trip than our meeting hosts would have put us up at. Found 1889 online, saw it was an LGBT friendly place and looked very nice. It is very nice. It's just expensive and had a few flaws worth noting. We stayed in the Elizabeth Barrett Browning Suite, which has paper thin walls and floors. We arrived late our first night and were surprised by our downstairs neighbor who knocked on our door to inform us that we were making too much noise and had awakened him and his wife. We were being quiet as mice, since it was midnight, but the mere sound of our footsteps and putting our suitcases on a rack made enough noise to awaken them. The following day, we noticed that we could hear every footstep of our next door neighbors, and so understood how we could have awakened our downstairs neighbor the night before. On our first day, Housekeeping left toilet rolls and plastic garbage bag in the room. Not a big deal, but at $395/night we expected more thorough/professional service. On second day, we left a Do Not Disturb sign on our door, as we did not want room service. When we returned later in the day, we found our room had been made up nonetheless. We had left out personal items and did not want anyone in the room, which is why we left the DND sign out. We called to register our disappointment about this breach of our privacy, and the woman who took our call was great, apologized and thanked us for the feedback. Lastly, the one morning we did have breakfast, which is included, the coffee was weak, the fruit was out of a can with sliced bananas added for freshness. and our host stayed in the dining room throughout our entire meal, chatting non-stop to guests across the room at various tables. He was beyond hospitable, bordering on annoying. The coffee in the guestrooms was undrinkable. Guests should bring their own coffee if it's important to you. We ended up using our Starbucks VIA instead of the coffee provided. Our bed sagged and left us with back aches each morning. All in all, 1889 is fine, but at the price charged, not worth it.

First I would like to thank the guests for their observations. We do read and appreciate all feedback from our guests.

We often have guests arriving at all hours of the night. Some guests tend to walk heavier than others do. The Carriage house was constructed 5 years ago and extra sound insulation was included in the walls and floors at the time of construction. Evidently the guests were heavier footed than they realized since they were asked to please keep their noise down by the guests below.

I certainly apologize for a roll of tissue and clean bags left in the room. There are no excuses for the oversight from our staff. Dealing with ‘Do Not Disturb’ signs have been an ongoing issue in the industry. Unlike a hotel, guests in a B&B often forget to remove the signs when they head out for the day. On several occasions the guests have returned only to feel neglected if their room had not been serviced. In most circumstances the guests who do not want housekeeping service will let us know so that we can honor their privacy. Our policy has changed several times trying our best to accommodate everyone. We have revised our policy so that no service will be done when a DND sign is left on the door. Guest services are available until 9 PM for replacement of towels if guests request them.

We are always concerned about our guests comfort. The mattresses are only 5 years old and are a hotel firm brand from Serta. After reading this review I spoke specifically with the guest staying in the same room about the comfort of the mattress. The husband stated that it was great and woke up feeling very rested.

Coffee complaints at the inn are rare. We use a blend that seems to satisfy 99% of our guests and has been mentioned in many of our reviews. If a guest is used to drinking Starbucks® coffee no regular blend of coffee is going to be strong enough for them. I do remember the guest drinking several cups of coffee at breakfast, rarely having her cup empty. I guess the coffee wasn’t that unpalatable.

Lastly, I am a host. I spend time with my guests engaging them in conversation each morning. It is the time to get to know our guests and to share stories, offer recommendations and simply socialize. Perhaps these guests would have been happier in a less social atmosphere.

From the moment Eve greeted me at the door with a glass of champagne till I bid Kyle "Adieu" after a wonderful breakfast I felt privelaged and pampered. I learned that Eve comes from the Four Seasons and it shows as her understanding of guest relations is top notch. Kyle was just a treat to be around with infectious energy and dry humour. Both staff had fabulous local knowledge of restaurants and things to see and do. Thanks Kyle for the CD shop recommendation - I am now the owner of some amazing appalachian music!

Sadly I only stayed one night but my room (Ralph) was stunning, comfortable and clean. The multi course breakfast - delicious, decadent and delightful!

Be sure to check out the gardens and greenhouse and take a "walk" downtown!
