“Awful in Asheville”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

We recently went to Asheville to visit friends for a few days and needed pet friendly accommodations. From the pictures and reviews on the internet we selected the White Gate Inn.
As we came in the front door I immediately wanted to cancel our reservation. We couldn't park the car, bring the dogs inside or see the room until we gave them a credit card and paid for the 2nd and 3rd night. Once we paid we were shown where breakfast would be laid out the next day at 9am only. We asked about having breakfast later and Frank said absolutely not, one serving at 9am and no chance of having a plate saved or brought to our room. We fortunately had rented the J. Kilmer suite which came with a not very well stocked kitchen. One tv in 2 bedroom apt. and the tub was barely big enough for one adult.
The next morning we had a limited breakfast and returned to our rooms. We decided to check out early and return home since the place was not what we expected for the high price we were paying. For over $300 a night I expected real luxury. The owners didn't want to refund our money for the 2nd and 3rd night. Very rude treatment from people claiming to be in the service industry. After a slightly heated exchange Ralph agreed to refund our money. We will never go back nor refer anyone to this B&B.

“Awful in Asheville”
A ”Red Flag “was raised during the initial phone conversation with these guests. Eve, our assistant, spent significant time on the phone explaining Inn policies, specifically financial policies, breakfast time, and dog policies. (They were bringing 2 dogs). These two men booked the Joyce Kilmer Suite, our largest suite at 1100 square feet, located in the WhiteGate Bungalow, for 3 nights.

Upon arrival, things rapidly went downhill. Upon entering the parlor these two men were arguing with each other and using language that cannot be repeated in this forum. Luckily there were no other guests around and Eve, who is very good at her job, having worked at the Ritz-Carlton, offered champagne and a tour of the first floor common areas. The men did stop arguing with each other but insisted that they be served breakfast at 10:00 AM. The also said their dogs went everywhere with them and that they would be bringing them into the main Inn. Eve let them know again that no guest dogs are allowed in the main Inn and it would be a shame to miss Frank’s wonderful 3- course breakfast served promptly at 9:00AM.

The 2 men did show up for breakfast, on time, and seemed to both enjoy all three courses. However, Frank did have a difficult time keeping the conversation on an even keel as one of the men persisted in talking about personal issues and making other guests uncomfortable.

Later in the morning one of the men rushed into the parlor and told Kyle, our Innkeeper, that his partner needed to go to the hospital, and they were checking out and not staying the last two nights. Kyle said he was so sorry, was there anything he could do, and due to the unusual circumstances he would be happy to issue a gift certificate for a return stay. The guest became belligerent, confrontational and let loose a barrage of obscenities. Kyle excused himself, called one of the owners on his cell phone and explained the situation. It was agreed to give these men a refund. A staff member was dispatched to the Bungalow to observe checkout. He observed Both men carrying heavy suitcases and dog crates, packing the vehicle. As was discussed later by the staff, it did not appear anyone needed to go to the hospital.

This was confirmed when the review was posted and nothing was mentioned in it about going to the hospital. The guest simply lied. We suspect the real reason for them leaving had to do with their negative comments about Asheville and the lack of any bars or clubs that met their expectations. When one of the men was threatening Kyle he also said he would write a bad review if he did not get his money back. Obviously he wrote one anyway.

We, as owners, decided a long time ago that we would not run our business worrying about what may or may not happen on review sites. It is easy to sometimes feel as owners and innkeepers an irrational guest can hold us hostage. The decision to refund had nothing to do with a threat of a bad review. We simply wanted these men off our property and away from our staff and other guests.

In 14 years of business we have never had this type of experience and now when a guests ask us “What was your worst guest experience?”, we have one to share!

I recently spent two splendid nights at the WhiteGate Inn in Asheville. Frank and Ralph are great hosts and very knowledgeable about the area. I enjoyed walking to downtown Asheville from the inn for shopping, dining and sightseeing. There is a trolley tour with a stop just a ten minute walk from the inn. Guests are called to the breakfast table at 9:00am and spend the next hour enjoying a spectacular three course meal while visiting with fellow guests and listening to Frank's stories. The canine members of the family announce dessert. Thanks to Ralph and Frank for a lovely weekend.

Frank and Ralph have a gem in the 1889 WhiteGate Inn. The staff is friendly and meticulous. Eve and Kyle deserve kudos for their part! The rooms are clean and neat...full of antiques and anything you could think of that you might need. From the coffee in fine china in the a.m. laid outside of the rooms to the FABulous breakfasts to the wonderful cakes and Amaretto in the evenings after a long night out. They truly think of everything. We stayed 4 nights and could easily do a week. Ralph's gardens are breathtaking. Frank thinks of everything - he makes sure you have dinner plans, reservations, ideas, anything. We loved his stories of the house (2 friendly ghosts). Striker and Ida Claire are fun and friendly. There is social hour between 5 and 6 with wonderful wine and hors d'oeuvres.
I would not think twice about going back and we will!!

Room Tip: sorry - no swimming pool. Couldn't seem to un click it. We stayed in the main house. Loved it.

Enter the world of WhiteGate through Innkeeper Ralph's masterful gardens and lose all sense of urban surroundings. Meet Innkeeper Frank, Actor/Comedian by profession, and bask in his jovial tour of their meticulously appointed sunshine-filled historic Inn. Greetings by friendly staff, delicious smells wafting from a laughter-filled kitchen, wine and hors d'oeuvres in the sunroom, and other guests with satisfied smiles -- ALL tell the tale! By the time Frank's tour delivers you to your American-Poet-Inspired guest suite, the "spell" of WhiteGate has already worked the first part of its magic --- the second part of the spell is BREAKFAST, and for that delight you simply cannot prepare yourself! The culinary offerings alone are splendid, but the fun begins when Frank goes into entertainer mode, joined by Ralph's unique humor (accompanied by properly behaved corgies Stryker & Ida Claire )--- then breakfast becomes an EVENT which invariably transforms strangers into friends. It is no small wonder that WhiteGate Inn has become synonymous with every happy excursion to Asheville for my companion and me.

Room Tip: All rooms are splendid; my advice is to choose one named for a favorite American Poet. Emily Di...

This is the #1 B&B in Asheville. The rooms, staff, breakfast, location, and ambience are nothing short of perfect. I have stayed in many B&B in the US and in Europe. NOTHING compares to the WhiteGate Inn.

Frank, Ralph, Eve, and Kyle are delightfully charming and take care of your every need. We were greeted in the driveway upon arrival and were given a glass of chilled champagne when we walked in the door. We were given a tour of the main in and were shown to our amazing Walt Whitman room.

The room is gorgeous. I've been to amazing rooms over the water in Bora Bora and I will compare every room I stay in from here on out to the Walt Whitman. This room outdid a luxury room in Bora Bora. We slept better in this room than we do in our own bed at home. It's quite, private, and romantic. Don't miss this experience. It has everything you could ever want and need.

I look forward to returning to the WhiteGate. It was a perfect getaway.

Room Tip: Steam shower+ 2 person jacuzzi tub+ heated floor = the luxurious Walt Whitman suite

The only reason they are not excellent is the ban on children in the main house. When you walk in, you understand why, but so many of the activities are in the main house, it looses something when you are can't go in with your kids. Other than that, they are very accomodating, and provide excellent service. The rooms are great!

Room Tip: The cottages are really wonerful if you are traveling with the family.

My daugther and I came to Asheville for the first time and stayed at the 1889 WhiteGate Inn and had a lovely time. Ralph and Frank and their staff were the most accomdating hosts I have ever had the pleasure to meet! The 3 course breakfast was awesome and always a surprise in the morning! loved the 8 am wake up knock and having fresh coffee outside of our room! With the Inn close to town but yet situated in a residential area we were only a hop, skip and a jump from downtown! The Inn is impeccable and the flower gardens breathtaking. I love the interaction with the the hosts and other guests in the morning and at happy hour! We had a spa day scheduled at the inn after a day of shopping... what a wonderful way to relax and unwind. We will definately stay there again! Hugs to Stryker and Ida Claire! Tammy Johnson- Marcus Ia. Thanks Ralph and Frank for a FANTASTIC time!

Room Tip: Not a bad room in the Inn!
