“If you like cemeteries?”
Reviewed February 25, 2014

My wife and I have always enjoyed looking at cemeteries and seeing who and what interesting people are interred there. With the exception of the map which did little to help find specific gravesites, the Cemetery was beautiful, well maintained and full of interesting historical characters, including the Thomas Wolfe family and O'Henry as well as civil war generals. We and another couple spent over an hour there and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

“Beautiful cemetary with some famous residents”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

This is a lovely old cemetary on a rolling hillside. Many sculptured angels and ornaments. Thomas Wolfe is buried here. Also, the author known as O'Henry. At this time of year people leave $1.87 in change on his grave because that was the amount Clara had in her purse before selling her hair in The Gift of the Magi. Sweet gesture.

“Interesting, good info to guide your visit”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

Pick up the excellent map and guide at the cemetery office or get it online ahead of time. If you like history and interesting monuments, this is a fascinating place. Be sure to bring $1.87 in coins to leave on the gravestone of author O' Henry (William Sydney Porter) - the heroine of his story "Gift of the Magi" only had $1.87, so people leave that amount. Cemetery staff collect the coins and donate to charity.

“I'm Prejudice”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

I only like this place because I can trace my mothers side of the family back to 1822. My grandmother and grandfather are buried here as is my great grandmother and great grandfather and my great great grandmother and great great grandfather.

As far as Thomas Wolfe, my grandmother grew up in his neighborhood and she described him as a weird drunk that nobody in the neighborhood liked!

“Lots of History”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

Before you visit Riverside in person, visit their website to get a map and more information about the people buried there - from Governor Vance to Thomas Wolfe, O. Henry, Richard Sharp Smith and George Masa, there is a lot of history in those hills, and a great afternoon of walking!
