“What’s Your Cemetery Style?”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

From a visitor/tourist standpoint, people go to cemeteries for various reasons. Some love the solitude, the amazing views some of them offer, a place to jog, to search out the headstones with the oldest date, etc. My husband and I love ornate and intricate grave markers. This cemetery did not have a lot of such ornamentation (see my photos for those we did find). While beautifully groomed and well paved, the lack of such markers did not keep us here long. The main office has a WONDERFUL pamphlet that lists ALL the significant markers of the famous and not so famous areas on the grounds. I highly recommend grabbing a copy (the same info is available on their website). For those literary ones of you, you probably already know the graves of O Henry and Thomas Wolfe are at this location.

“Peaceful and beautiful”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

The Riverside Cemetery is one of the most beautiful and peaceful cemeteries we've ever visited. It's known as the resting place of Thomas Wolfe and the office has a list of other important people in history to be buried there. The cemetery is very hilly and perfect for walking the switch backs up and down the hills. There were a number of locals running and walking while we were there. I understand visiting a cemetery isn't for everybody, but this one is worth it.

This is a great place for a walk. It's hilly, and historic. Interesting grave stones and mausoleums.

“Worth seeking out”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

Definitely get a guide before you go here, or if you visit the Cemetary office, some of the more famous graves' locations are on their bulletin board. A nice, peaceful, free outing, you can stay as long as you like... people are dying to get in. Seriously, it's very pretty and an important piece of North Carolina's history.

“Riverside Cemetery”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

Riverside is on the west side of the Montford section across I-240 from downtown. Stop at the Visitor Center on the back side of the Chamber of Commerce building for directions and for a good shop with lots of Asheville stuff at reasonable prices.

The cemetery is on a west facing hill and is a fine example of the garden type late 19th and early 20th century community cemetery. Lots of interesting graves of people prominent in Asheville history. Good web site.
