“An excellent choice for fresh, innovative food in a great atmosphere”
Reviewed June 29, 2008

The Market Place was recommended to us by the owner of the B&B where we stayed. I did a cursory read of some of the reviews, but mostly, looked at the menu. It looked good, and I trusted her judgment. Our experience was great-- the food was absolutely terrific. We had a gnocchi appetizer with black truffle... it was the lightest, and most flavorful gnocchi I have ever had in years of gnocchi eating. Our main dishes (flounder and duck) were both similarly excellent. I have noticed a few reviews about poor service... perhaps there is one particular waiter whom these reviewers have all encountered, or perhaps the restaurant was just going through a slump. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable and all other aspects of the service were equally good. Since our experience was so positive, it's hard to picture it otherwise-- but of course, every restaurant can have one or two less talented staff.

“Over Rated!”
Reviewed May 28, 2008

Four of us ate at The Market Place Memorial Day Weekend – and have to say we found it over-rated. The restaurant was not busy- but we had to ask for every single thing- from water to butter to a second round of cocktails.

In general the menu was not very inventive- but the trout others have mentioned was good, as was the young chicken- crispy skin and tender meat. The roasted halibut was well prepared; the duck breast entrée was tough. The plates were minimal- not more than 2 tablespoons of vegetable or starch.

We ordered four desserts including the soufflé of the night. It was truly a shock- it was barely sweetened stiffly beaten whipped egg whites ONLY, baked a little with a thin sauce poured into it. It did not resemble any recipe for soufflé ever published- and was tasteless to boot. The rhubarb crisp was good, not special. The vanilla panna cotta with strawberry sorbet was good. The best was the deconstructed lemon meringue pie- a frozen semifreddo with really tart lemon sorbet, a shortbread cookie and a little baked homemade marshmallow cream on the plate.

All and all I wouldn’t go there again -it’s just too expensive for a “fairly good meal”.
