This may sound strange, but while walking around downtown it seemed like I was transported back to the 60's again.....Very grungy (people and places), although we did find a great restaurant (looked strange, but great food). There are street performers everywhere...and some of them acted like they were on acid trips....I kid you not! If you are into people watching....you'll be in heaven here...find a seat somewhere and watch away. For me, been there, done that, won't be back!

So much talent in Asheville. We spent hours going through several gallerys. We cannot wait to go back.

We visited the Asheville area just before Christmas to take the Biltmore candlelight tour and while we were at it we visited downtown Asheville. While Asheville likes to promote itself as an art center, the downtown is neither particularly quaint nor attractive. Basically it is just another mid-size city with all that that implies, but Asheville is also hilly which can make walking around town difficult. If you want to experience something a little different in terms of arts and crafts, try the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community tour near Gatlinburg, Tennessee instead. No city traffic and no parking problems.

The River Arts District in West Asheville with it's many studios is not to be missed. However, the Downtown Asheville Art District that we are speaking about here is a collection of fine art and craft galleries, performing arts venues and art museums located in the heart of downtown Asheville.

We walked around the arts district, many little boutiques. The old Woolworths was turned into little kiosks of various arts and crafts items, however, the lunch counter is still operating as an old fashioned eatery. We had a malted for old times sake, very cool.
