“What a great surprise!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014 via mobile

We visited Cecilia's yesterday based on TripAdvisor reviews. What a treat! Cecilia is warm and welcoming - and funny. She was gracious and helpful in answering our questions about the menu. I had two empanadas, chicken and spinach. Both were wonderful and for all you non-believers out there, the spinach empanada could have been served as dessert. That good. My husband, the original tamale freak, can't believe he has finally found a spot that serves fantastic homemade tamales. He especially recommends the black bean. Meals are served with a small salad of mixed greens with a lightly drizzled salad dressing. Perfect. The only caution we might have is that if you are a confirmed proper Southern sweet tea drinker, save your money for another tamale and drink water. Very reasonably priced but show up early. Gets very busy. We will show up early and often.

“Make Cecilia's a habit - great food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2014

The food is so good at Cecilia's Kitchen that it will easily become a habit!
breakfast (M-Sat), lunch (M-Sat) or dinner (Thurs-Saturday)

This is like eating in your best friends kitchen! Cecilia is warm and welcoming and you can watch her cook while you wait. On warm days there is a nice veranda to enjoy the sun. She carries interesting teas and unusual sodas in addition to good coffee. (I am guessing that beer and wine might be added sometime in the future.)

Try a baked empanada or a delicious tamal. All are made with fresh, local ingredients and are served with a fresh salad and a nice herb dipping sauce. (These are not hot or picante like Mexican food.) Many folks buy them by the dozen and taken them home for a party or snacks later.

The empanadas are baked (not fried) and bursting with flavor. Ceci makes both vegetarian and local beef and chicken empanadas. Here are a few examples: beef-onion-olives-hard boiled eggs, chicken-ricotta-parmesan, eggplant-tomato-onion-roasted red pepper, or fresh corn-cottage cheese-parmesan.

Try a chicken, pork, cheese or mushroom tamal wrapped in a corn husk and steamed. There is a promise of new flavors in 2014.

Or for a different taste check out the savory crepes with a wide range of fresh and local ingredients. You would swear you just stepped into a little cafe in France. They are made to order and can be adapted for almost any dietary need. They are large enough to share but you will want to eat it all yourself! Here are a few that will tempt you:
- - smoked salmon - leeks cooked in butter - Swiss cheese and cream
- - Brie cheese - caramelized onions and leeks - Swiss cheese and cream
- - homemade pesto - mozzarella - fresh tomatoes - Parmesan cheese

And then there are the sweet crepes - chocolate sauce, homemade dulce de leche, whipped cream with tasty fillings or just a simple sugar and fresh lemon. They are all delicious with a cup of coffee for a little decadent breakfast or afternoon pick-me-up.

Or just stop by for a wonderful bowl of soup served with a fresh buckwheat crepe (galette) sprinkled with cheese. Here are a few recent choices: fresh chicken with garden vegetables, cauliflower in a rich coconut-curry broth, fresh vegetables, squash-onion-carrot-corn delight, New Year's pozole with shredded pork, hominy, and just a hint of chile. Each day is a new surprise.

Your first visit will satisfy you and I guarantee you will be back for more!
Ceci's is a charming little kitchen with down-home warmth and great food.

“EXCELLENT fresh, made to order food with AMAZING hospitality!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2013

DO NOT MISS CECILIA'S KITCHEN on your trip to Asheville. A+! Cecilia's Kitchen is a tiny little place with a huge heart. The food is quite possibly some of the best I have eaten anywhere and it is so inexpensive. The homemade vegetable soup WAS the best I have ever had. The ingredients are all fresh . . . even in the soup. My mother and I had soup , tamales and empanadas that we watched Cecilia make for us. Cecilia is a native of Argentina, so the food is authentic. If you are looking for atmosphere, Cecilia's might not win you over, but if you are looking for fresh, prepared to order amazing food--then head on over to meet Cecilia.

“Great crepes and Empanadas”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 23, 2013

The restaurant is small but the service and food are excellent. The owner cooks the food to order behind the counter and you can make small changes to the orders. I chose the mushroom, chicken and swiss cheese crepe . ( Minus the cream which was listed) The crepe is made from whole wheat flower and light as a feather. The filling was delicious and though it looked large I could not stop eating it! My husband had the empanadas filled with vegetables and that was also delicious. Also on the menu are tamales with mole w either meat or mushroom and many varieties of crepes.
We chose to share the chocolate crepe for dessert. We each had a drink and the bill was only about $ 20 for a meal fit for a king. Cecile is very friendly and comes out to make sure you are happy with the food.

“It's all about the food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2013

Nice little place tucked away off of Merrimon Avenue. Little atmosphere with a couple of tables and a counter along the window. But the food is awesome, inexpensive and the ingredients local. Whether it is an empanada, tamale or crepe with a cup of homemade soup, it is created before your eyes and is so tasty. If you are looking for a fancy place to impress your girlfriend, look elsewhere. But if you want some exceptional eats, you have arrived.
