Please note: Craggy Gardens is not located at 195 Hemphill Knob Road. That is the address of the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitors Center. Unfortunately, we used this address when mapping our trek to Craggy Gardens, which is actually another 20 miles away off the parkway...

We liked this trail. The kids had enough rocks to climb but it wasn't super challenging. We all had a nice walk and great views.

We visited Craggy Gardens on last day of May during an unusually clear sky and perfect temperature for a hike. However, this was certainly not the ideal time to drive 8 hours to go see these gardens as there were no flowers in bloom in the gardens to see. We hiked the Craggy Pinnacle Trail with a 4 year old and a small dog. It took us about 1 hour and 15 minutes roundtrip to the top and back. So, count on a 45 minute roundtrip for most. A park ranger met us on the trail as we were coming back down and we had a nice conversation with her. She informed us that this year the third week of June is the ideal time to see the pink and purple rhododendrons in bloom. She was very friendly and helpful.

The restrooms were closed as there was no running water. There was a portable however. If you want to get to the Craggy Pinnacle Trail, you don't access it from the visitor center. You keep driving east and drive through the tunnel and park on the other side.

The gardens were still pretty to me even without the flowers. I liked the way they were eerily shapped. The flower canopy has got to be very romantic in full bloom though. Perhaps, we'll make another trip years down the road. The views from the top of the trail and overlook were worth the short hike.

You can not pass by one of the iconic images of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Even though it was a rainy afternoon when we stopped, you could tell this place was beautiful The blooms were just starting to come out. The Park Rangers at the Visitors center were not only helpful about the Parkway but also other nearby sites as well as best methods to get back to Asheville. Mt. Mitchell is a short drive away, you will want to see the view from up there if you are at Craggy Gardens because it is just a couple of miles up the Parkway.

If you're looking for a short hike but still want beautiful scenery, vistas, and a little exercise then this trail on the Blue Ridge Parkway is for you. It's a short 25 mile drive from Asheville where we were visiting.

We hiked the Craggy Gardens Pinnacle trail which is less than 1.5 mile round trip hike and takes you up to 360 degree views for some gorgeous picture taking. The hike has a moderate climb of about a 160 feet elevation on a well kept trail. We hiked this in early June and the rhododendrons had not quite yet bloomed but were ready to pop open.

Short hike, great return on investment of time!
