Owner description: Traditional and contemporary Southern Appalachian crafts, including century-old pieces, are displayed in this folk art center, which also houses the first craft shop in the U.S.

The Folk Art Center is easy to find on the Parkway. The location is beautiful and the building is interesting. The upstairs galleries show a variety of crafts and two-dimensional art. Contemporary quilts hang all around the balcony that encircles the building. The main floor craft area is a large shop selling a wide variety of things, but mostly not what you would consider folk art. Mostly crafts (jewelry, weaving, pottery, wood items, toys) and art prints. Prices ranged from inexpensive for mass produced things to very expensive for the better, one of a kind items. The women staffing the sales desk the day we visited were quite knowledgeable about the artists and the crafts, and very willing to talk to us. There are many other Appalachian craft stores in the area, perhaps better than this one. However, its convenient location on the Parkway makes it an obvious stop if you are traveling on it.

Stop and at least browse all the local items made by some incredably talented individuals. The quilts alone will amaze anyone who has admired them. And the building itself sits so perfectly up in the trees you just want to sit outside and relax for awhile!

This was the best stop we had for seeing local crafts and art- really enjoyed our visit. The quits on display were amazing! I loved the variety of artists in display. Most items were also very affordable. In addition, having a few artists on hand to chat with was fun.

The Folk Art Center is one of the main attractions in Asheville. Located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, about ten minutes from downtown, the Center offers visitors a taste of traditional and contemporary North Carolina craft--from ceramics, to iron, weaving, furniture, and lots more. There is an extensive gallery downstairs with lots of beautiful hand-crafted things for sale, and historical exhibits upstairs. The day we were there, a dulcimer club was meeting and jamming. Fun to watch and delightful to listen to. Definitely worth a visit.

Gifts galore! So many crafts and art pieces to see, give yourself ample time. Mostly all high quality pottery, jewelry, textiles, iron works, and often local artisans providing demonstrations. You can also find inexpensive souvenirs like homemade soaps, toys, T-shirts and coffee mugs.

Well worth your time while in NC. Don't miss this very special destination!
