If you shop here, you are supporting an area artist. The Folk Art Center is part of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild which adds only a few artists from Southern Appalachian counties to its membership each year. It's not all North Carolina, but neither is Southern Appalachia. The jewelry selection is particularly strong, but you'll find pottery, woodturning, weaving, quilting and more as well. Don't forget to check the gallery upstairs as well. There are always exhibits of member work and they change regularly. I did most of my Christmas shopping here and at New Morning Gallery last year and it's so much more pleasant than going to the mall.

Lots of lovely things to see and to learn about. Small enough that you don't feel like you've missed much, but large enough to feel satified.

One of the best craft shops around! Terrific little museum, perfect for little kids to admire lots of neat things (Look guys! These dolls are made of corn husks!). Bathrooms. Informative exhibit about Blue Ridge Parkway. Nice National Park Service store (buy something and support them!). But wow, the shopping in this store is to die for.

The Fine Arts Center has the best collection of area arts and crafts around in one location. It is large and spacious and easy to get around. We have bought pottery and even guide books here.

This is a well run art gallery that also has paths nearby where visitors can walk their dogs (and children who are tired of being stuck in the car). They feature a wide variety of local mountain art as well and cards, special gifts, photos and fantastic choices in post cards. I also loved the variety of books which included mountain authors (both fiction and non-fiction). Their bathrooms were clean and the staff very helpful with any questions. Another thing I also admired was the abundance of parking. I've stopped at art galleries before and had no place to park. This isn't a problem at all at this particular gallery.
