We went to the Folk Art Center today. It only takes an hour or so to see the exhibits and shop a little. It's a very nice place. I loved the crafts on the lower floor and the gallery on the upper floor. Right off of the Blue RIdge Parkway it's easy to find.

Great place to see (and buy) local crafts. From glasswork to pottery to linens, jewelry and woodwork, this place gives you a great sampling of local artists' work. Reasonably priced items...I always stock up for gift-giving throughout the year. Don't forget to check the website for times when local artists will be giving demonstrations. There is also a small museum (free) upstairs.

This is definitely the place to gain an appreciation of the local crafts and their history. Many items available for sale as well as a gallery presentation. Worth a visit if you're in Asheville.

easy to reach from tunnel road and blue ridge parkway, this art center has crafts for sale, demonstrations and finer arts on display. There is a ranger there to guide you with hiking trails too, and trail heads are right across the street.

Firstly the use of light inside the building is excellent. The layout is also very pleasant and makes the place accessible. The downsides are
1. The museum of local art is excellent but tiny. Fair enough they do try to rotate the displays on the number of times I have stopped by
2. The local art on sale is NOT local ! we saw this time artists from as far away as the great lakes !
3. No refreshments - you drive all the way out there and there are no refreshments at all. I think US attractions can really learn a trick from the UK here - where even the smallest garden center has a coffee or tea shop. They do have restrooms though.
4. All the local art on sale was clearly marked up for the venue, at least four figures for the smallest peice.

A disappointment if you make a special trip for sure but it is rather nice if you so happen to be passing by... just don't expect any refreshments or any local artists. Try the River Arts center in Ashville for that.
A shame about this place - a real opportunity to make something special lost...Don't make a special trip based on heresay if you have limited time in the Ashville region there are plenty more worth while things to do and a better chance of affordable LOCAL art elsewhere.
