Owner description: Visit the Western North Carolina Nature Center - home to over 60 species of animals including river otters, black bear, red wolves and cougars. The Western North Carolina Nature Center connects people with the animals and plants of the Southern Appalachian Mountain region by inspiring appreciation, nurturing understanding, and advancing conservation of the region's rich biodiversity. The Nature Center is proud to be accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Founded in 1924, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, education, science, and recreation. Look for the AZA logo whenever you visit a zoo or aquarium as your assurance that you are supporting an institution dedicated to providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for you, and a better future for all living things. Less than 220 facilities in the United States have met the high accreditation standards set by AZA

It was just perfect to take the grandkids to visit ( and the older kids to -me!) Lots of animals to see, laid out nice, and a place to go after eating all that Turkey.

Not as big as a zoo but the character of the center, friendly staff and animals make up for it - lots for the kids to do and see and worth it just to see the bears!

Easily visitable in a morning or afternoon. Call ahead to find out when feeding and snack times are for the animals. We saw the bobcat getting her lunch and a snack being set out for the otters and they were much livelier and more interesting. If you are a member of another AZA member zoo, show your card for free admission.

We went to the nature center in the late afternoon. We enjoyed it very much. The animals were all in view and could be seen easily. It is small as for as zoos go but the exibits there were great. Well worth the time if you enjoy seeing wildlife.
