The Smith-McDowell House Museum is a lovely place to visit. The tour guides are very informative and give you a detailed tour throughout the house. The tour is about an hour long, but you can stay for as long as you like reading the exhibit information. The tour is well worth the $8 fee. I love small quaint tours!

Very little furniture. Just a large home from early Asheville history.

As we arrived, the primary tour guide passed us in the hall with another tour group of three people. There were three of us in our group, and rather than asking us if we wanted to wait for her next tour, she passed us off to an intern who had never given the tour before. He did the best he could, but did not add much to our experience. In several cases, we had to tell him what a particular artifact was. In time, I'm sure he will be a good tour guide, but he's not there yet. I'm much more disappointed with the primary tour guide for not ensuring that we got our money's worth. On the subject of money, this tour cost us $8.00 and we took several other tours which cost less and which were of much better quality.
The concept of the tour was also a little strange. Rather than gear the restoration and exhibits to the Smith or McDowell eras, the rooms were each themed to a different era over the lifetime of the home. This made things more confusing rather than more clear.
Considering that this is the oldest "Mansion" in Asheville, I really thought that it could have been presented better.

We visited as a family and were the last tour of the day. Our guide was enthusiastic and not only gave us a thorough tour through the rooms representing the decades the house was lived in by different families, but answered our many questions. If you are interested in the local history of asheville and want to ask questions from a knowledgeable guide this is a must tour!

It was just an old house that smelled like moth balls. I mean it was cute and all but not worth going out of your way to see.
